The present specification discloses a cytoplasmic male sterile plant of the genus Lactuca having low temperature growth ability comparable to that of a plant of the genus Lactuca with a normal cytoplasm, or a progeny thereof. According to an embodiment of the present invention, it is possible to alleviate a reduction in the growth ability at low temperature observed in previous CMS plants of the genus Lactuca and provide a CMS plant of the genus Lactuca having low temperature growth ability.

The object of the present invention is the provision of a cybrid plant of the genus Lactuca which is useful for producing a first filial generation seed, and a method for producing the same. The present invention is directed to a cybrid plant of the genus Lactuca, a progeny thereof, or a part thereof, comprising, in cytoplasm thereof, a gene derived from mitochondria of a plant of the genus Helianthus. The cybrid plant is preferably cytoplasmic male sterile. The present invention is also directed to a method for producing the cybrid plant of the genus Lactuca.

The present specification discloses a cytoplasmic male sterile Brassica rapa plant having a growth ability equivalent to that of a Brassica rapa plant having a normal cytoplasm or a progeny of the cytoplasmic male sterile Brassica rapa plant. In existing-cytoplasmic-male-sterile B. rapa plants, the compatibility between the nuclear genome and mitochondrial genome is insufficient. Therefore, the existing-cytoplasmic-male-sterile B. rapa plants have the problem that the growth ability is deteriorated compared with those of B. rapa plants having a normal cytoplasm. With the present invention, it is possible to improve the deterioration of growth ability which has been observed in the conventional cytoplasmic male sterile B. rapa plants and provide a cytoplasmic male sterile Brassica rapa plant having an improved growth ability.

Disclosed is a cytoplasmic male sterile plant of the genus Petunia having, in the mitochondrial genome thereof, a DNA molecule originated from the mitochondrial genome of a tobacco plant, or a hybrid plant with the cytoplasmic male sterile plant of the genus Petunia, or a progeny of the cytoplasmic male sterile plant of the genus Petunia or the hybrid plant. The cytoplasmic male sterile plant of the genus Petunia is a stable line in which the growth ability of young seedlings is improved and which is not susceptible to fertility restoration, and further, achieves diversification of available CMS cytoplasms.
