An output portion (70) includes an output waveguide part (74) formed of the photonic crystal and an output waveguide (72) formed in the input waveguide part continuously with the input waveguide. The output waveguide includes an another taper section having such an inclination that the light input in the backward direction is not coupled into the input portion. Alternatively the output region is constructed differently but always such that light input in the backward direction is not coupled into the input portion. An optical signal is transmitted in a forward direction from the input portion to the output portion and is not transmitted in a backward direction from the output portion to the input portion.

A light regulating device and photonic crystal display device utilizing bandgap controls including a photonic crystal including a material that is capable of varying its refractive index in accordance with an electric field, the photonic crystal having a photonic bandgap in a specific frequency range; and an upper transparent electrode and a lower transparent electrode arranged on an upper side and a lower side of the photonic crystal, respectively, to which a voltage is applied, wherein a size of the photonic bandgap of the photonic crystal is controlled by the voltage applied between the upper transparent electrode and the lower transparent electrode. With the present invention, a reflection-type or penetration-type display is available which has a simple pixel structure, a high light efficiency, and a high color contrast ratio, the display using high reflection factors depending on color ranges of a photonic crystal.

An image display apparatus (1000) is provided to improve display characteristics, the apparatus including a prism (300) and a pixel section (400) on one side of the prism (300). The pixel section (400) includes a reflective electrode (410) and dielectrics (420) disposed at a predetermined distance from the reflective electrode (410). The dielectrics (420) are in contact with the reflective electrode (410) if voltage is applied, and the effective refractive index changes according to the image signal. The effective refractive index of the section of the reflective electrode (410) in contact with the dielectrics (420) changes, and accordingly, the reflectivity of the reflective electrode (410) changes corresponding to the image signal. The pixel section (400) is able to regulate the surface plasmon resonance by regulating the reflective electrode (410), and is able to display the black state using the surface plasmon resonance. The image display apparatus (1000) provides improved contrast ratio by preventing color leaks from arising in the black state, and thus, improve display characteristics.

A reflective liquid crystal display (LCD) includes an LCD panel having an upper electrode layer and a lower electrode layer and a plurality of color filters, including a red color filter, a green color filter and a blue color filter, to selectively filter white light; and a driver for driving the upper and lower electrode layers of the LCD panel to interpose non-display periods between display periods for displaying a desired color by mixing a combination of red light, green light and blue light, wherein during the non-display periods, the driver drives the upper and lower electrode layers to display white light, which includes all of the red, green and blue light, and none of the red, green and blue light at different, distinct time periods. The LCD according to the present invention is able to adjust the luminance of the display according to circumstances.
