There are known methods for the removal of pollutants from aqueous media, particularly for the removal of organic pollutants from water, wherein the desired effect is achieved by mainly introducing ozone (O3) into the liquid to be cleaned. The ozone forms (H2O)-radicals in the water, wherein the radicals have an oxidation effect. According to the invention, the OH-radicals are directly produced electrochemically and the electrochemically produced OH-radicals are used for the removal of organic pollutants, for rendering the pollutants ineffective and/or for the reduction of the effectiveness thereof. The associated device comprises an electrode arrangement (10, 20) with positive and negative electrodes (10i, 21), forming an electron array, and an inlet- and outlet (35, 26) for the liquid to be cleaned.
