An ECC block is constituted by RS(248,216,33). Of a data length of 216 bytes (symbols), only 16 bytes are allocated to BCA data and the remaining 200 bytes are used for fixed data having a predetermined value. Using the fixed data of 200 bytes and the BCA data of 16 bytes, parities of 32 bytes (symbols) are calculated. Only the BCA data of 16 bytes and the parities of the former 16 bytes of the 32-byte parities, that is, a total of 32 bytes only, are recorded in a burst cutting area of an optical disc. In decoding, error correction processing is carried out by using the fixed data of 200 bytes. The unrecorded parities of 16 bytes are processed as having been erased. Thus the error correction capability in a burst cutting area of an optical disc can be improved.

Simultaneously with this, a carrier signal generation block generates a carrier signal for carrying the address information and outputs it to the modulation block. In step 2, the modulation block MSK-modulates the carrier signal input from the carrier signal generation block with the pre-encoded address information input from the address generation block and the obtained MSK-modulated signal is output to a wobble formation block. In step S3, the wobble formation block forms on the optical disc a spiral groove wobbled in accordance with the MSK-modulated signal input from the modulation block. On this optical disc, an arbitrary address can be accessed rapidly.

In step S3, the wobbling unit forms, on the optical disc, a spiral groove wobbled adaptively to the MSK modulation signal supplied from the modulator. In an optical disk which has, on one side thereof, two layers including a recording film L0 layer in an unformatted state and another recording film L1 layer in a formatted state, the recording film L0 layer is formatted with marks at step S1, and formation of marks corresponding to recording data is started beginning with the recording film L0 layer at step S2. After the recording film L0 layer is used up, marks corresponding to recording data are formed on the recording film L1 layer at step S3. The present invention can be applied, for example, to a DVD player.
