An object of the present invention is to provide a simplified power assisting mechanism to be used in the power-assisted bicycle and facilitate the installation of the same mechanism to the bicycle body frame. A power-assisted bicycle which can travel with a pedaling force supplemented with an electromotive power, comprising: a sprocket 2 which is rotatable to transmit a pedaling force to a driving wheel; an electric motor 37 for providing an output of an electromotive power from an output shaft 37a thereof; an assist-gear 30 coupled to the output shaft 37a via a gear mechanism 40; and a pin 123 for coupling the assist-gear 30 coaxially with the sprocket 2. These components are arranged on a common base 50, forming a single unit 11 which can be attached to and detached from a bicycle body frame. A head portion of the pin 123 is covered with an elastic member 129. It is disposed in a region of the engagement between the sprocket 2 and the pin 123. Thus, the electromotive power supplied to the assist-gear 30 can be transmitted via the pin 123 and the elastic member 129 to the sprocket 2.

The one-way clutch has a tooth part (112) mounted on a driven means and a piece part (100) mounted slidably yet non-rotatably on a drive shaft (4). The tooth part has a first engagement face (121) formed with a plurality of teeth (114) and the piece part has a second engagement face (110) formed with a plurality of pieces (102). The first engagement face and the second engagement face are disposed facing each other generally perpendicularly to the axial direction. A disc spring (124) is disposed on the rear face of the piece part. As the piece part rotates in the direction of running forward, the piece is engaged with a sharply sloping face of the tooth to engage with the tooth and the angle of the piece with respect to the second engagement face increases, whereby the piece slides so as to increase the distance from the tooth part in resistance to the disc spring. As the piece rotates in the opposite direction, the piece abuts with the gently sloping face of the tooth and the angle of the piece with respect to the second engagement face is made smaller to decrease the distance from the tooth part by means of the elasticity of the disc spring.

In order to provide an electric assist bicycle capable of performing a smooth electric assist traveling with a good feeling by generating an assist force having high follow-up characteristics even on an uphill road, the following control is carried out. A pedaling force F L , a bicycle speed V, a crank angle θ, a start angle θs, a maximum pedaling force angle θm0, and an end angle θe0 are detected (step 350). An assist force is calculated from the pedaling force F L and the bicycle speed V (step 352), and a motor control is performed (step 354). A determination is made whether the bicycle is traveling on an uphill road based on the pedaling force F L and the crank angle θ during performing an assist action (step 356). During it is determined that the bicycle is traveling on the uphill road, a re-calculation of an uphill assist force and the motor control are carried out on the basis of the pedaling force F L , the bicycle speed V, and the crank angle θ when the crank angle reaches a angle for starting applying an uphill assist force (affirmative determination at step 358) (step 360).
