摘要:
A method for decoding a transmitted data sequence using a full-length decision window, such as in a trellis decoder, in which transition paths have converged. Transition paths within the decision window and their associated soft values are compared with a stored candidate for the next best path and associated stored soft value. Based on the comparison, and whether the transition paths and the best path have merged during the decision window, the decision window is shifted or the stored candidate for the next best transition path and associated stored soft value are replaced by the possible candidate for the next best path and associated soft value. The decision window is then shifted.

A digital communication receiver (300) communicates with a digital communication transmitter across a communication channel and has: a channel estimator (330), which provide a channel estimate (H0) of the communication channel based on a received signal (yt); an equalizer (340), which estimates a sequence of transmitted symbols (ut) and provides a sequence of decided symbols (ût) based on the received signal and the channel estimate; and a channel tracker (350), which produces an updated channel estimate (Ht) based on the received signal (yt) and the decided symbols (ût), and which supplies the updated channel estimate to the equalizer. The digital communication receiver (300) also has a controller (370), which receives channel quality indicative data (Metric) associated with an output from the equalizer, determines whether these data fail to meet a predetermined criterion, and, if so, supplies an enabling control signal ('Tracker Y/n?') to the channel tracker, so that the channel tracker will switch from a disabled state, in which no updated channel estimate (Ht) is produced, to an enabled state, in which said updated channel estimate (Ht) is produced.

In a communication system, including a transmitter and a receiver, the receiver is synchronized with the transmitter, and a modulation type in a signal transmitted by the transmitter and received by the receiver is detected. A first portion of the received signal is correlated with one or more signals, representing modulation types used by the communication system to detect the type of modulation being used. Synchronization is established between the transmitter and the receiver. The first portion may be correlated with each of one or more different signals, representing various modulation types used in the communication system to detect the type of modulation used. Alternately, the first portion of the received signal may be derotated by different amounts, to produce a plurality of derotated signals that are correlated with the signal representing modulation used by the communication system, in order to detect the type of modulation used. If the correlation does not result in a determination of the modulation type, either a predetermined modulation type is selected or the decision of modulations type is made at a later stage, based, e.g., on a comparison of signal qualities or equalization results.

In order to increase accuracy of DC-offset compensation within radio receivers and to ensure that such compensation does not erode the dynamics of the decoders located within the receivers, the present invention separately performs mean value estimation and channel estimation. Additionally, a bias DC offset value caused by the use of a training sequence to perform mean value estimation can be corrected for in the channel estimator and equalizer.
