摘要:
In a cellular, broadband radio access network, such as a High Performance Local Area Network Type 2 (HIPERLAN/2), which employs multiple antennas per base station, the process of identifying and selecting the most appropriate base station antenna to support a given mobile terminal may be accomplished more effectively by allowing the mobile terminal to initiate antenna selection and, thereafter, to identify the most appropriate one of the multiple base station antennas. By utilizing the mobile terminal in this capacity, the process of antenna selection can be accomplished more effectively even if there is relatively little uplink communication between the mobile terminal and its corresponding base station.

In a wireless telecommunications network, transporting identification information, such as access point identifier (AP ID) and wireless terminal identifier (WT ID) information, in each uplink and each downlink protocol data unit (PDU) being transmitted between a sender and a receiver, without increasing bandwidth requirements. This is accomplished by modifying each PDU as a function of a first identification vector, prior to transmission, wherein the first identification vector reflects, for example, the AP ID and the corresponding WT ID. At the receiver, the PDU is re-modified as a function of a second identification vector, wherein the second identification vector reflects an expected AP ID and WT ID. If the receiver is the intended recipient of the PDU, the first and second identification vectors will be the same, and the process of re-modifying the PDU merely serves to restore the original value of the PDU. The receiver can detect whether the original value of the PDU has been restored through a data integrity check, for example, one which employs a cyclic redundancy code (CRC). The result can then be used to determine whether the receiver is, in fact, the intended receiver, and whether the receiver should decode the PDU or discard it.

Techniques are provided for use with automatic repeat request (ARQ) schemes in a data network to minimize a bandwidth used by a receiver and a transmitter in the network to transfer data packets, by discarding outdated packets that have not yet been successfully transferred. In accordance with an embodiment of the invention, a bit in set in the ARQ packet header to force the receiver to accept packets subsequent to one or more erroneous or unreceived packets that have been discarded and not resent. In accordance with another embodiment of the invention, after data packets have been discarded, sequence numbers are reassigned to the non-discarded data packets that are yet to be sent to the receiver, so that a transmitted stream of the non-discarded packets will have consecutive sequence numbers.

A reshaper is provided in a DLC (Data Link Control) layer of a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) system. The system can be configured to support various link and network protocols such as ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), Ethernet and IP (Internet Protocol). The DLC reshaper overcomes time distortion of a stream of packets or cells that is introduced as the stream passes through the WATM, by restoring or maintaining proper time intervals between packets or cells in a stream. Thus, an output stream of packets or cells from the DLC reshaper is not slipped or shifted in phase, and does not include jitters. The DLC reshaper uses ARQ (Automatic Repeat Request) sequence numbers of the packets or cells to detect when one or more packets are discarded or lost. The DLC reshaper can determine time intervals for packets or cells in a stream based on a PCR (Peak Cell Rate) for the connection that is being supported, and ARQ sequence numbers of the packets or cells. The DLC reshaper can also determine specific transmission times for the packets or cells in the stream, based on the PCR, the ARQ sequence numbers, and a reference time such as a transmission time of a first packet or cell.

In connection with numbering scheme changes in a telecommunications network calls are directed so that a called number is first analysed (11) in order to determine whether it belongs to the new or the old numbering scheme. If the analysis shows that the number belongs to the old numbering scheme it is converted in a stage (12) by means of a conversion algorithm in a first database to a number according to the new numbering scheme, after which directing is carried out on the basis of the number according to the new numbering scheme. If required a number according to the new numbering scheme can be allocated directing information from a second database which in particular can comprise only portable number. The invention also concerns a device for directing calls in this way.

Power consumption of a mobile terminal is reduced by providing a system wherein a base station specifies a time period, at the end of which a mobile terminal that is hibernating in a power-saving mode will listen for paging messages from the base station. If no paging messages are present, then the mobile terminal continues hibernating, thus conserving battery power by not communicating with the base station. Either the base station or the mobile terminal can initiate a process to transfer the mobile terminal from an awake mode to a hibernating mode. In accordance with another embodiment of the invention for use in systems that require frequent connectivity testing, an agent can be provided within the base station to answer connectivity test inquiries on behalf of the mobile terminal. The mobile terminal can communicate periodically with the base station to update information that the agent uses to respond to the test inquiries.

Method and system for performing an optimised hand over between a first base station BS1 and a second base station BS2, wherein a mobile terminal MT requests a hand over. During hand over the loss of data has to be avoided and a fast retransmission should be provided. Further the hand over is preferably under the control ofthe mobile terminal MT initialising the hand over. The invention therefore provides a method and a system where an information stream is divided into segments and where each segment is numbered. The numbered segments are transmitted via the first communication path P1 and via the first base station (BS1) to the mobile terminal MT and at the same time they are stored in a buffer (BF) on the second communication path P2 to the second base station (BS2), which is the one where the hand over is requested to. After the execution of the hand over one numbered segment identified by the exact number is requested via the second communication path P2. The numbered segment is then available for the mobile terminal MT and is exactly specified by the concrete number.
