An end node in a packet-switched network is proposed wherein the end node is arranged to exchange packets consisting of a packet header and payload data with a server node connected to the packet-switched network. The end node includes at least one module adapted to extract quality of service parameter values from the headers of packets received over the packet-switched network (402) and to insert the extracted quality of service parameter value in the headers of packets destined for transmission to the server node over the packet-switched network (405). In this manner the end node automatically adapts the quality of service parameters received over the packet-switched network to correspond with the type of quality of service defined in received packets. Such a system means that only the server node need be configured with the quality of service parameters applicable on the particular packet switched network, so greatly reducing the installation and configuration overheads in a multi-user network.

The current invention relates to the registration of mobile stations in a mobile communications network. It has particular relevance to handovers and roaming between base stations of an unlicensed radio access network (110) and those of a conventional cellular network (120). As the cells in an unlicensed radio access network have a rather small size, it means that handover potentially can occur far more frequently than for a conventional cellular network. This can result in an undesired ‘ping-pong’ effect, i.e. that the mobile station is switching back and forth between two radio cells too frequently. The current invention reduces this effect by preventing the mobile station to register to the unlicensed radio access network during a modifiable period of time (306).

The present invention relates to an improved location process for determining the location of mobile stations when a GSM network is extended by other access networks, for example unlicensed radio access networks. An access network controller supporting a connection with the mobile station sends a location service entity a location request that includes information indicative of at least one positioning method supported by the network element for a particular mobile station. By providing the location service entities with information on the location methods to use, there is no need to configure the location service entities with this information in advance. Moreover, the process is flexible and can be tailored to the network element making the request and thus to the type of connection actually used by the mobile station. There is no need for the location entities to launch several location methods before retrieving sufficiently accurate information since the most suitable methods are communicated in advance.

An unlicensed radio access network controller is proposed that is adapted to communicate with the core network portion of at least one public licensed mobile communication network. It is connected to a broadband packet switched network and is adapted to exchange messages with mobile stations communicating via an unlicensed radio interface with access points that are also connected to the broadband packet-switched network. The access controller is furthermore adapted to selectively communicate with a plurality of mobile service switching nodes within the core network portion and comprises a selection module arranged to select an individual one of the plurality of nodes for communicating with a mobile station via said access network controller. The provision of a connection with several mobile service switching nodes for routing traffic to and from mobile station connected to the unlicensed radio access network enables the access controller to better distribute traffic over the core network, so improving its efficiency.

A system and method for adapting circuit-switched payload transport between a mobile station, MS, (30) and an unlicensed-radio access network utilizing the Real-Time Transport Protocol, RTP. The MS (30) and an access network controller (103) negotiate the number of speech/data frames per RTP packet during the assignment of a traffic channel. The network controller notifies (62) the MS of a requested or minimum acceptable sample size, and the MS utilizes that sample size, if able, to send (86) RTP packets to the network controller. If the MS is not capable of utilizing that sample size, the MS utilizes the closest sample size that the MS can support to send (89) packets to the network controller. The network controller then calculates (90) the sample size utilized by the MS and utilizes (91) the calculated sample size in transmissions to the MS. Thereafter, if network conditions change, another negotiation is initiated (94-97) to adapt the sample size to the changed conditions.
