Methods for treating surfaces with lipase to provide an enzyme-surface complex and surfaces so treated facilitate oil removal. One such treated surface is a fabric with lipase sorbed onto the surface. A preferred sorbed lipase is isolatable from a Pseudomonas organism or clone. Treated fabrics have substantial hydrolysis activity for oil stains and perhydrolytic activity for oil stains, have altered surface wettability, and retard oil and hydrolysis by-produce redisposition in the presence of aqueous solutions. The sorbed lipase is resistant to removal during fabric laundering and retains substantial hydrolytic activity even with exposure to drying at elevated temperature. The hydrolytic activity of the lipase-fabric complex persists during storage or wear. Hydrolysis by-products are removable during laundering at basic pH or in the presence of surfactant.

The activation of glycerol ester hydrolases, toward triglyceride oils, is correlated to the molar ratio of total triglyceride to surfactant concentrations in the test solution. This ratio dependency, when considered in laundry compositions, allows for predictable and improved utilization of these enzymes in the hydrolysis of triglyceride stains. A particularly preferred enzyme for this use is isolatable from Pseudomonas putida ATCC 53552. This enzyme, or hydrolase, has sufficient hydrolysis activity in a laundering solution to hydrolyze at least about 5 wt. % of total triglyceride stains in a laundering solution within about 15 minutes at about 25°C.

An enzymatic perhydrolysis system, useful for bleaching, has a novel enzyme, a substrate, and a source of hydrogen peroxide, and provides in situ formation of peracid in aqueous solution. The substrate is selected for enzyme catalyzed reaction, and preferably is an acylglycerol with two or three fatty acid chains. The enzyme is hydrolytically and perhydrolytically active even in the presence of anionic surfactants, has lipase acitivity, and is isolatable from Pseudomonas putida ATCC 53552.

A perhydrolysis system or activated oxidant system for in situ generation of peracid in aqueous solutions includes an esterase or lipase enzyme, a source of hydrogen peroxide and a functionalized ester substrate having the structure wherein R is a substituent having at least one carbon atom and X is a functional moiety or group. Preferred substrates include glycerides, ethylene glycol derivatives and propylene glycol derivatives. The system is adapted for use in both high and low temperature wash conditions. In one embodiment, a lipase enzyme is employed with an insoluble substrate and an amulsify- ing agent. In another embodiment, an esterase and/or lipase enzyme, a glyceride substrate and hydrogen peroxide produce a peracid with active oxygen from a peracid of at least about 0. 5 ppm. Bleaching processes and stain removal capabilities are also disclosed.
