A method of forming a tire component comprising a first rubber compound and a second rubber compound is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: (i) extruding a first rubber compound through a main extruder (20) and a main gear pump (25); (ii) extruding a second rubber compound through a second extruder (40) and a second gear pump (42) into the main extruder (20); (iii) varying or tuning the ratio of the first compound to the second compound by adjusting the speed of the main gear pump (25) and/or the speed of the second gear pump (42) to obtain a first blend ratio of the first compound to the second compound and then applying a first rubber profile directly onto a tire building machine (95) to form a first zone of rubber having the first blend ratio; and (iv) adjusting the speed of the main gear pump (25) and/or the second gear pump (42) to obtain a second blend ratio of the first compound to the second compound, and then applying a second rubber profile formed of the first compound and the second compound to form a second zone of rubber having the second blend ratio. Also, a pneumatic tire comprising a tire component with two or more adjacent zones of different mixtures of rubber is disclosed. The transition in terms of rubber composition from one of said zones to an adjacent zone is continuous.

A method and apparatus for manufacturing an annular tire component such as a tire bead includes locating a toroidal support (12); placing an ejector nozzle (32) in an interference relationship to the toroidal support (12); and simultaneously ejecting through the nozzle (32) a continuous stream of an elastomeric belt component material (52) in a suitably fluid state and a continuous length of at least one thread-like component (44) disposed within the stream onto the toroidal support (12) in a predetermined bead configuration. The bead configuration is at least partially defined by a relief in the nozzle ejection port and by the toroidal support onto which the bead is formed. Rotation of the toroidal support (12) may be coupled with the simultaneous ejection of the elastomeric component (52) and thread-like component (44) in order to create an annular bead structure. A tire may be constructed having a desired bead configuration and location by means of the method and apparatus.

A groove (42) comprising sidewalls is located within the bending region of the first tire sidewall, the groove (42) deforming segment by segment between a non-deformed state and a deformed, constricted state in response to a bending of the first sidewall bending region radially within the rolling tire footprint. An air passageway (43) is defined by the groove (42) and a first cover strip (202) or by the groove (42) and a tube assembly. The air passageway (43) resiliently deforms between an expanded condition and an at least partially collapsed condition in response to a respective segment by segment deformation of the groove (42) when radially within the rolling tire footprint. The first cover strip (202) is located at an open end of the groove (42) for separating the air passageway (43) from ambient air pressure.
