A load control system and tool arrangements are disclosed for controlling the shutheight and back-up load on a mechanical press tool in response to a monitored or measured parameter indicative of press tool force or part quality, which monitored parameter is communicated to a controller for determination of a control signal to control a means for regulating the press tool back-up load and shutheight without interrupting press operations. The control system is operable to control a single station or multi station press and can be installed on either an individual press tool or the bolster or slide.

The crown portion 20 of a press has an open top thereby permitting the crankshaft and connection arm assembly 56 to be lowered therein in a pre-assembled state. A cover plate 48 is then fitted to the crown and a motor 50 assembly is mounted thereon. Since the crown does not have to be inverted for the fitting of the crankshaft assembly it is possible for the press frame comprising the bed 14, uprights 18 and crown to be formed as a single casting thereby avoiding the necessity for tie rods.

An electric motor supplied with a speed control voltage from a control 12 is connected to a flywheel 1 and drives the slide of a press through a clutch. A tachometer generator 24 coupled to the flywheel supplies to a speed meter 28 by way of a potentiometer 30 and relay contacts 32 a voltage indicative of the speed of the flywheel. Contacts 32 are open when the clutch is not energised and potentiometer 30 modifies the voltage supplied to the meter 28 to cause the meter to indicate a pre-set normal running speed of the press even though the flywheel is running at a speed higher than the said normal running speed. A second potentiometer 22 and relay contacts 20 which are closed when the clutch is not energised modifies the speed control voltage in such a way as to cause the flywheel to be driven at a higher than normal speed when the clutch is not energised but to be driven at its normal speed when the clutch is energised and the contacts 22 are opened. The meter 28 thus indicates normal running speed both during the over speed period when the clutch is de-energised and also when the speed falls as soon as the clutch is energised.

The oil is circulated through the crankshaft and connection arm assembly in the crown (20) and then caused to flow through a thermal transfer device (296) mounted to each of the uprights and comprising a series of baffles (300) over and through which the oil flows under gravity to form a series of vertically spaced pools in good thermal contact with the uprights. By adjusting the baffle structure so that the oil flows downwardly at a higher or lower rate, the amount of thermal transfer can be adjusted to ensure that equal thermal growth of the uprights and connection arms occurs.

A guiding arrangement for the reciprocating slide 56 of a mechanical press includes guideposts 58 which are rigidly connected to the crown 20 of the press and depend downwardly therefrom, passing through guide bushings 66 in the slide assembly. The crown 20 is connected to the bed of the press by uprights 18. In order to counteract the non-vertical forces exerted on the slide by connection arms extending from a crankshaft in the crown and pivotally connected to pistons connected to the slide and moving in cylinders fixed to the crown, which forces tend to cause the slide to tilt about a horizontal axis perpendicular to the axis of the crankshaft, hydrostatic bearings are mounted between each piston and cylinder to exert restraining forces in a direction perpendicular to the axis of reciprocation of the slide and along lines which intersect the axis of rotation of the pivotal connections to the pistons.
