For this purpose, the bipolar plate has a core layer consisting of a steel material, the surfaces of said core layer which are associated with the respective electrolyte carrier of the fuel cell each being provided with an anti-corrosion layer protecting the core layer from corrosion. According to the invention, in this case the anti-corrosion layers are each made from a metal material and extend on both sides in each case completely over the core layer (10). At the same time, the anti-corrosion layers (11, 12) for their part are each completely covered by an electrically conductive functional layer (13, 14), which is substantially completely impermeable to metal ions emerging from the core layer (10) and/or the anti-corrosion layers (11, 12).
