    摘要: A device for electrolytically treating, e.g. polishing, a metal surface (11) comprises a housing (1) for making sealing contact with the surface (11) thereby to enclose an area for electropolishing, and an electrolyte chamber (5) defined within the housing (1) bounded in part by said area when the housing (1) is connected to the surface (11). A cathode (4) for contacting the electrolyte during use is also mounted within the housing (1). Said sealing contact may be made by means of a deformable seal. In operation, electrolyte is provided in the chamber (5) in contact with the surface (11) and the cathode (4), and an electric current is passed through the electrolytic cell constituted by the surface (as anode) (11), the electrolyte and the cathode (4) in order to treat the surface (11) by anodic oxidation. Preferably, the electrolyte passes through the chamber (5).

    摘要: Ruthenium in aqueous solution in a first, oxidisable oxidation state (e.g. as RuNO(NO₃)₃) is converted to an insoluble form in a second, different oxidation state (e.g. as RuO₂.nH₂O) by establishing an electrochemical cell wherein the solution is the electrolyte and electro­chemically oxidising and reducing the ruthenium in the cell. The insoluble form may be filtered from the liquid. The ruthenium treatment may be a stage in the removal of radioactive species from liquids such is in the treatment of medium and low level activity liquid waste streams, wherein actinides are precipitated and filtered off either before or after ruthenium treatment. Subsequently, residual activity may be removed from the stream by either or both of (a) absorption, followed by filtration and electro-osmotic dewatering and (b) electrochemical ion exchange. Filtration fluxes may be maintained by direct electrochemical membrane cleaning.
