Releasable retaining means (65, 70) assure that the sash (48) during the sideways displacement is retained in the displacement plane. By the translatory motion between the closed position and the start location in the displacement plane, the sash (48) is secured against sideways displacement towards collision with the fixed building element.

A safety hinge for windows and doors comprises hinge parts (1, 2) for fastening on a frame (4) and an opening leaf or sash part (5), respectively, and has tubular guideways (6-8) which form a continuous tubular bearing for removable, axial retention of a hinge pin (9). The bearing is closed at one end and open at the other end and is of a greater length than the pin (9) so that the said pin does not project from the open end. For removal of the pin (9), an opening (11, 12) is formed on a side of at least one guideway (6, 7), which is inaccessible in the closed position of the sash part (5), for insertion of a tool for impact on the pin (9) for disengagement from the axial retention.

Opposed sash members (30) are connected with opposed main frame members (31) by means of a hinge assembly (40) comprising a guide member (1) secured at a sash corner (13) for displacement with respect to the main frame, a first arm (3) pivotally connected with a main frame corner (23) and with the sash member (30) remote from the sash corner (13), and a second arm (7) displaceably and pivotally connected at one end (15) with the main frame member (31) and pivotally connected at the other end (17) with the sash member (30) remote from the sash corner (13). The guide pin (1) and first and second arms (3, 7) are interconnected in a unitary hinge structure (40) by means of a third arm (11) secured to the sash member (30) and friction means is integrated in the pivotal connection (10) of the second arm (7) with the third arm (11).
