The measuring signals are statistically evaluated. Evaluation consists in comparing an actual variation of the measuring signals and an anticipated value of the variation based on an actual movement.

Unnecessary braking interventions of an automatic braking system (330) are suppressed in a vehicle during uphill or downhill drives. The automatic braking system (330) is used as a collision warning and emergency braking system but can falsely interpret certain route sections as possible obstructions especially during uphill or downhill drives and unnecessarily warn the driver or initiate an unnecessary automatic braking process of the vehicle. The vehicle safety system (310) according to the invention prevents unnecessary braking interventions which are triggered due to falsely interpreted obstructions, said system suppressing such automatic braking interventions during uphill and/or downhill drives. For this purpose, the vehicle safety system (310) according to the invention detects an uphill and/or downhill drive of the vehicle by analyzing signals which are received by one or more systems (320, 322, 324, 326) of the vehicle.
