Storage stable pesticide compositions comprising neem seed extracts which contain azadirachtin as the active pesticidal ingredient wherein the compositions are characterized by their non-degrading solvent systems. In a first embodiment, the pesticide compositions contain solvent systems characterized as having greater than 50% by volume aprotic solvents and less than 15% by volume water. In a second embodiment, the pesticide compositions contain solvent systems characterized as having greater than 50% by volume alcohol and less than 5% by volume water.

A process is disclosed for inhibiting corrosion of an iron based metal in contact with the system water in an aqueous system, which comprises incorporating into the system water an effective amount of bis-phosphonic acid ethers selected from the group consisting of compounds having the formula (HO)₂OP-R-(OR′) n -OR-PO(OH₂) wherein each R is independently selected from the group consisting of methylene and ethylene, wherein R′ is selected from the group consisting of methylene, ethylene and ethylene substituted with one or more methyl groups and wherein n is an integer from 0 to 4, and water soluble salts of said bis-phosphonic acid ethers. Advantageous corrosion inhibition using the bis-phosphonic acid ethers in combination with hydroxymethylphosphonic acid is also disclosed.

Polyether bis-phosphonic acid compounds are disclosed which have the formula (HO) 2 OP-R-(OR') n -OR-PO-(OH) 2 where R is selected from the group consisting of methylene and ethylene, R is selected from the group consisting of ethylene and ethylene substituted with one or more methyl groups, and n is an integer from 1 to 4, water soluble salts thereof, and esters thereof with alkyl groups having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms. Also disclosed is a novel preparation of certain of these compounds by reacting certain hydroxyalkylphosphonic acid dialkyl ester compounds with certain 2-benzyloxyalkyl organic sulfonates; reacting the intermediate formed therefrom with hydrogen or a hydrogen source; reacting the intermediate formed therefrom with a hydrogen ion acceptor and certain sulfonyl chlorides; and reacting the intermediate formed therefrom with certain hydroxyalkylphosphonic acid dialkyl ester compounds to form a polyether bis-phosphonic acid compound which may be hydrolyzed to form the polyether bis-phosphonic acid. Useful intermediates are disclosed which have the formulas HOR'-OR-PO(OR") 2 , HOR'-OR-PO(OH) 2 , and X-0 2 S-OR'-OR-PO(OR") 2 , wherein the above-indicated benzene rings of said formulas are optionally substituted with selected groups, wherein R and R are as defined above, wherein R" is an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and wherein X is selected from and alkyl groups having from about 1 to 6 carbon atoms.

A method of preparing phosphonate compositions comprising di-(phosphonomethyl) formal is disclosed which comprises (a) forming an intimate mixture of hydroxymethylphosphonic acid and formaldehyde or its condensates, said mixture having a least about 0.5 equivalents of formaldehyde per equivalent of hydroxvmethylphosphonic acid; and (b) subjecting said intimate mixture to a temperature of between about 100°C and 180°C for a time sufficient to allow the components to react to form a reacted mixture comprising di-(phosphonomethyl) formal. Di-(phosphonomethyl) formal, phosphonate compositions wherein at least bout 25 more % of the phosphonate groups are present as di-(phosphonomethyl) formal, and phosphonate compositions which comprise hydroxymethylphosphonic acid and di-(phosphonomethyl) formal such that the mole ratio of phosphonate groups present as di-(phosphonomethyl) formal to phosphonate groups present as hydroxymethylphosphonate is at least about 1:3, as disclosed, may be used for corrosion inhibition in aqueous systems.

The cyclic ether bis-phosphonic acids diphosphonotetrahydrofuran, diphosphonotetrahydropyran, and diphosphonooxepane and their salts and esters are disclosed, as is their use in water treatment. Also disclosed is the preparation of the cyclic ether bis-phosphonic acid compounds by reacting a corresponding dialkoxy cyclic ether with certain dialkyl phosphites, reacting the intermediate formed therefrom with certain halotrimethyl silanes, organic acid halides or inorganic acid halides, and reacting the intermediate formed therefrom with certain trialkyl phosphites to form a bis-phosphonic acid compound which may be hydrolized to form the cyclic ether bis-phosphonic acid. Certain of the first intermediates are considered stable reagents which may be used for preparing flame retardants, chelating agents and corrosion inhibitors.
