The present invention relates to an azo compound represented by the following formula (1) [wherein, A represents a naphthyl group having a substituent, R 1 to R 6 each independently represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having a carbon atom number of 1 to 5, an alkoxy group having a carbon atom number of 1 to 5, a sulfo group, or an alkoxy group having a sulfo group and a carbon atom number of 1 to 5, and X represents a benzoylamino group having a substituent, a phenylamino group having a substituent, a phenylazo group having a substituent, or a naphthotriazole group having a substituent] and a salt thereof. By using the azo compound or a salt thereof of the present invention, a neutral color polarizing plate and a color polarizing plate for a liquid crystal projector being excellent in polarization performance and durability and having less color leakage in a visible light region can be provided.

8-(anilino)-1-naphthalenesulfonate (ANS) analogs and methods for their use in analyte detection assays are provided. The subject ANS analogs are characterized by having at least one non-hydrogen substituent on their phenyl moiety and producing a reaction product with 3-methyl-benzothiazolinone hydrazone hydrochloride (MBTH) or an analog thereof, e.g. MBTHSB, that exhibits reduced drift. In certain preferred embodiments, the subject ANS analogs are described by formula (I) wherein: n is 1 to 5; and X is a substituent other than H. The subject ANS analogs find use in a variety of applications, particularly in analyte detection assays, such as glucose detection assays.

A process for synthesizing a quinonediazide ester is disclosed in which the esterification reaction of a polyhydroxy compound with 1,2-naphthoquinonediazide-5-(and/or -4-)sulfonyl chloride is carried out in the presence of a base catalyst comprising a basic compound represented by formula (I) or (II):
wherein R₁ to R₁₅ are defined in the disclosure. A positive working photoresist containing the ester is also disclosed. The process is capable of highly selectively yielding the desired photosensitive material containing specific unreacted hydroxyl group(s). The photoresist has high resolving power with reduced film thickness dependence of the resolving power, is less apt to leave a development residue, and has excellent storage stability for prolonged period of time.

Im erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren zur Herstellung von Aminoarylsulfonsäuren durch katalytische Hydrierung von Nitroarylsulfonsäuren wird durch die anzuwendende erhöhte Feinverteilung des Wasserstoffs und durch die erfindungsgemäße Begrenzung der Konzentration der zu hydrierenden Nitroarylsulfonsäuren eine wesentliche Erhöhung der Raum-Zeit-Ausbeute bei gleichzeitig verringertem Katalysator-Verbrauch erreicht.
