A compatible polymer composition is used as a binding and coating medium for flat textile structures and characterised in that the polymer combination is composed of: (a) 30 to 95 wt. % of a vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer with 5 to 40 wt. % ethylene and 0 to 15 wt. % one or several comonomer units from the group of the ethylenically unsaturated hydrolisable silanes, the N-methylol(meth)acrylamides and their derivatives, the ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic and sulfonic acids and their derivatives; and (b) 5 to 70 wt % of a styrene-acrylic acid copolymer with 5 to 35 wt. % acrylic acid and 0 to 15 wt. % one or several comonomer units from the group of the ethylenically unsaturated hydrolisable silanes, the N-methylol(meth)acrylamides and their derivatives, the ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic and sulfonic acids and their derivatives.

The subject matter of the present invention is the use of aqueous dispersions of two-phase emulsion-graft copolymers as heat- and solvent-activated binders for stiffening agents in the textile and leather industries. The graft copolymer consists of two phases, the respective glass transition temperatures Tg of which differ by at least 30 °C, the glass transition temperatures Tg of one of the phases being over 50 °C.
