A development apparatus (40) includes a housing (48) defining a chamber (46) holding a supply of two-component developer material consisting of toner, and magnetizable carrier beads. The development apparatus also includes an extended life, increased reliability magnetic roll assembly within the housing for repeatably transporting a desired quantity of attracted developer material, fed from the chamber, for movement through the development zone. The improved magnetic roll assembly (50; Fig.2) includes a rotatable non-conductive shell or substrate (90; Fig.2) surrounding a magnetic member (M1-M4; Fig.2) so as to prevent the creation of eddy currents in the substrate during its rotation. The substrate has an elastomeric coating layer formed (100; Fig.2) over it. The elastomeric coating layer has a mechanically deformable smooth surface (102; Fig.2) for effectively holding, even at relatively high rates of speed, the quantity of attracted developer material thereon being transported. The smooth surface is deformable by magnetized carrier beads acting under the influence of the magnetic member.

An apparatus which advances developer material to an electrostatic latent image recorded on a photoconductive member (10). The apparatus uses a magnetic roll (85) having a rotating tubular member (80) with a stationary magnet (84) disposed interiorly thereof to attract developer material thereto. The magnet is substantially V-shaped and generates a strong magnetic field over one region (84c) to hold the developer material on the tubular member, and a weak magnetic field over the remaining region (84d) to release the developer material therefrom. Opposite polarity magnetic poles (84a,84b) are impressed on the legs of the magnet. A trimming blade (82), positioned adjacent the tubular member opposed from one of the magnetic poles (84a), regulates the thickness of the developer material as it is being loaded on the tubular member.

A multi-color imaging apparatus uses a recharge step between image creation steps in order to condition a charge retentive surface (10) prior to forming the second and subsequent images. A voltage sensitive corona generating device (36,51,61) having a high characteristic slope described in a graph of the current delivered to a charge receiving surface (I) vs. grid minus charge receiving surface voltage (V) is used to both reduce the residual toner voltage across the previously toned image and to charge the toned and untoned areas of the charge retentive surface to a substantially uniform level, so that developability conditions for the subsequent image are improved.
