An apparatus, method and printing machine that utilizes a ramped backer and/or a shock absorbing material in a cleaner subsystem to reduce or prevent photoreceptor motion quality disturbances. The shock absorbing material prevents an instantaneous high impact force between the spacer wheel and the photoreceptor backer bar that can cause photoreceptor motion quality disturbance. The ramped backer prevents the instantaneous deceleration of the spacer wheel with the backer that causes motion quality disturbance due to the shaking of the photoreceptor belt from the impact on contact. The combination of the shock absorbing material and the ramped backer create a preferred embodiment to prevent photoreceptor motion quality disturbance by the cleaner system.

A method for determining cleaner retraction timing faults in an electrostatographic printer is described. A toner image (M to J) is developed on a moving photoreceptor surface during a non-printing mode of the printer. A retractable cleaner is operated to remove a portion (M to L, K to J) of the toner image and the remaining portion thereof is measured and compared to a predetermined length in order to determine timing faults associated with the cleaner subsystem of the electrostatographic printer.

A cleaning method and apparatus that provides lubrication to a secondary detoning roll (112) in a cleaner brush system, thus reducing cleaning failures. The toner particles removed from the first detoning roll (111) are transported to the second detoning roll (112). This allows lubrication of the second detoning roll (112) and reduces the wear problem of the second detoning roll (112) due to lack of lubrication.

An apparatus for cleaning residual toner and debris from a moving charge retentive surface of an image forming apparatus includes a multiple turret style blade holder (10) located such that an individual blade is selectively indexed into optimum position for cleaning the moving photoreceptor. The blade holder (10) contains a number of cleaning blades mounted radially from a central core and by rotating the holder (10) about its longitudinal axis a specified number of degrees (360°/number of cleaning blades on the holder) a new cleaning blade is moved by the indexing device (35,41,42,44,46) into the cleaning position to replace a failed blade. The indexing device removes the failed cleaning blade and positions a new cleaning blade in frictional contact with the photoreceptor for cleaning.

Described herein is a method to evaluate the cleaning performance of brush cleaners by measuring the brush to photoreceptor nip width (115) (e.g. cleaning footprint or contact zone) using a sensor (120). The sensor (120) detects a leading edge (92) and a trailing edge (91) of the brush to photoreceptor nip (115) to determine the nip width measurement which is converted into diagnostic information using a software algorithm or similar mode of conversion. The diagnostic information can be used in a variety of ways such as a diagnostic tool for a technical representative to warn against the end of brush life, to adjust cleaner biases for automatic changes in setup to achieve better cleaning, to predict brush replacement, to correct brush BPI (i.e. brush to photoreceptor interference) for an under or over engaged brush.
