A method of making electrical steel strip characterized by low core loss and high permeability in the rolling direction includes the steps of: hot rolling a slab of an electrical steel composition into a strip, hot band annealing in a temperature range effective to coarsen the grains sufficient to improve magnetic properties in a rolling direction of the strip, cold rolling, batch annealing in a temperature range effective to produce a batch annealed grain size of not greater than 40 νm and, preferably not greater than 20 νm, and temper rolling to provide the strip with a transfer surface roughness (Ra) of less than 49 νin. Electrical steel articles are manufactured from the steel strip upon final annealing. The electrical steel articles have a grain texture including a {110}∫001⊃ orientation and improved permeability in the rolling direction.

A method of improving post-combustion heat recovery in a vessel containing a charge of molten ferrous metal and slag includes the use of a lance for the introduction of oxygen gas into the charge. The method includes blowing oxygen into the charge through at least one first nozzle of the lance for refining the molten metal into steel. Oxygen is blown through at least one second nozzle of the lance from at least one location spaced above the first nozzle at an oxygen flow rate effective to produce foamy slag in an amount for obtaining a post-combustion heat transfer efficiency of at least about 40% without appreciable overflow of the slag from the vessel. The oxygen flow rate from the second nozzle is at a minimum at about a starting point of a peak decarburization period of the charge. Iron oxide containing pellets may also be added to the charge. In this case, the oxygen flow rate from the first nozzle may be reduced while the iron oxide containing material is being added, and the reduced oxygen flow may be replenished with an inert gas.

The system includes a detector test head (22) having a heat shield (24) defining a generally cylindrical inner wall through which the pipe passes longitudinally. The test head includes structure (50, 62, 64) for spirally directing water onto the inside surface without contacting the hot pipe as it passes through the heat shield. Debris is thereby removed from the space between the shield and the pipe, and the test head Is effectively cooled and shielded from the heat of the pipe. Where the pipe is heated above its Curie temperature, such that the pipe is rendered non-magnetic, no normally required saturation coil is needed to magnetically saturate the pipe for eddy current testing, because the coolant flowing over the inner wall cools the test head but does not lower pipe temperature below the Curie point.

The present invention provides a new and improved method and apparatus for tapping molten metal through the top hole of a metallurgical vessel (2). The apparatus utilizes a ladle or a BOF furnace or other metallurgical vessel (2) used for the containment of molten metal. At least one extension drive mechanism (24) is attached to the support structure (6) position the distal end of a lance (32) within the vessel (2) a predetermined distance above the surface (16) of its contents. The lance (32) is connected to an inert gas source (26) such as Argon. Once the lance is properly positioned, the inert gas is directed onto the surface (16) of the molten metal to prevent the slag from entering the tap hole (4). An alignment drive (30) can also be attached to the support structure (6) to adjust the position of the extension drive (24) relative to the vessel (2) so that the lance (32) may be properly positioned within the vessel (2) above the tap hole (4). The extension (24) and alignment (30) drives are operatively controlled by a computerized controller (22) which interfaces with the sensors to monitor the physical characteristics of the vessel (2). The controller (22) operatively controls the drives to position the lance (32) a predetermined distance above the tap hole (4) of the vessel (2).
