A vasoocclusive coil is reinforced with a stretch resistant member to improve safety during retraction of the coil. The stretch resistant member is fixedly attached at one end to the vasoocclusive coil, and the other end of the stretch resistant member is detachably mounted to an elongated pusher member to allow for placement and release of the vasoocclusive coil within the patient's vasculature. The stretch resistant member may be formed from a therapeutic and/or bioactive non-metallic material to enhance the therapeutic properties of the vasoocclusive coil.

Disclosed is an apparatus and a method for removable of undesired material from body lumens. The apparatus may be used for fragmenting or removing a thrombus or occlusion from a blood vessel. The apparatus includes first shape segments and second shape segments connected to form a coiled member. A longitudinally extending tether is positioned inside the first shape segments and outside the second shape segments along the length of the coil. Applying a proximal force on the tether produces a change in the shape of at least a portion of the coil from a first generally linear configuration to a second complex three dimensional shape. A method of using the apparatus to engage and remove, or fragment, the thrombus or occlusion is disclosed.

The catheter shape-retaining cover (30) includes an elongated tubular member (32) having a predetermined non-linear shape and one or more inner lumens (38) to receive a distal tip (42) of a catheter (44). A tubular dispenser (52) for the catheter may be attached to the elongated tubular member. A shaped mandrel (72) may be placed in a first inner lumen (68) of the sheath. The assembly may be heated to a temperature that makes the distal tip of the catheter become more plastic, and then cooled to pre-set the shape of the distal tip of the catheter. The distal tip of the catheter also may be hydrated in an inner lumen of the sheath, and the catheter may be hydrated in the tubular dispenser.

The three dimensional, low friction vasoocclusive coil (1) has a distal portion (8') that is three dimensionally shaped, and a proximal portion (9') that is linear or helically shaped. The distal three dimensional portion (8') will form a basket for filling the anatomical cavity at the site in the vasculature to be treated, while the proximal portion (9') will fill and reinforce the basket. The vasoocclusive device (1) is formed from at least one strand of a flexible material formed to have a first inoperable, substantially linear configuration for insertion into and through a catheter or cannula to a desired portion of the vasculature to be treated, and a second operable, three dimensional configuration for occluding the desired portion of the vasculature to be treated. The vasoocclusive device (1) has a distal portion (8') having a second operable, three dimensional shape for filling the anatomical cavity at the site in the vasculature to be treated, and a proximal portion (9') having a second operable, substantially linear shape for filling and reinforcing the distal, three dimensional shaped portion when it is implanted at the site in the vasculature to be treated. Described herein is an intravascular flow modifier that comprises a plurality of annular support members and a plurality of cross-struts. The plurality of annular support members are interwoven with the plurality of cross-struts to form a tubular framework. The annular support members and cross-struts are formed of a shape memory polymer which has shape memory properties and a glass transition temperature that is above body temperature. The tubular framework has a compressed configuration at a temperature below body temperature and an expanded configuration at a temperature above body temperature. In the expanded configuration the tubular framework has an enlarged inner and outer diameter when it is heated above the glass transition temperature.
