A compact 180° opposed piston pump/compressor minimizes axial spacing between its pistons on the drive shaft and thereby reduces the shaking couple and noise from reciprocation. Each piston has its own eccentric element press-fit into the connecting rods so as not to occupy space between the pistons. The shaking couple can be further reduced for pistons of different masses by selecting the mass of the cup retainers to compensate for the difference in overall piston masses. The pump also includes an improved cylinder sealing arrangement having a circumferential groove in an angled surface at the end of the cylinder. The pump also has a special cover and seal for closing the open neck of the pump crankcase and an improved multi-lobed valve stop. The pump further uses tubular transfer members for transferring intake and/or exhaust air into the crankcase and/or between valve heads.

A dirt trap groove is formed in each pocket adjacent to the hinge line of the flapper, a corner relief groove surrounds lands which support the flappers in their associated pockets above the groove, and the extending-part of each pocket widens in the direction away from the cross-part of the pocket. The mating T-shapes of a flapper in a pocket restrain the flapper in the pocket without interfering with the opening and closing motion of the flapper.

In addition the pump includes a nutating yoke positioned within the housing. The yoke includes a semi-spherical recess adapted to accept said pivot ball. The nutating yoke is adapted to be connected to the eccentric, such that rotation of the eccentric causes the yoke to move about the ball. The pump also includes a connecting rod connected to the yoke, a piston connected to the connecting rod and a cylinder adapted to accept the piston, wherein the movement of the yoke about the ball causes the piston to reciprocate within the cylinder.

Disclosed herein is an oilless air compressor having a cooling system with a drive unit operating a crankshaft disposed within a crankcase and to which is attached a pair of pistons movable within corresponding compression cylinders. A blower wheel is concentrically mounted to the crankshaft adjacent the exterior of the crankcase. Each compression cylinder includes a thermally conductive cylinder insert which a bore in which the corresponding piston rides. A thermally conductive heat sink having a plurality of annular cooling fins is cast integrally to the outer diameter of each cylinder insert and connected to the crankcase such that the compression cylinders and the crankcase are completely enclosed. Each cylinder insert is made of an aluminium alloy, preferably having a low silicon content and a high melting point so that it can be insert cast within the cooling fin and anodized without degrading the surface finish of its inner bore.
