    摘要: A pyrometer for determining the temperature of a surface in the presence of reflected radiation has two infrared radiations sensors, each responsive to different wave length, positioned to receive radiation from the surface. An adjustment factor is developed from sensor response signals when reflected radiation and surface temperatures are the same, and is combined with sensor response characteristics over a range of surface and sensor indicated temperatures to develop a correction factor which when multiplied by the indicated temperature provides the actual surface temperature.

    摘要: Hot-dip aluminum-zinc coatings having an aluminum content in excess of about 25% aluminum exhibit a tendency for corrosion flaking, that is, selective corrosion along the interface between the aluminum-zinc overlay and the underlying intermetallic layer. The tendency to such corrosion flaking increases with the aluminum content of the coating. Methods for minimizing this tendency by accelerated cooling of the molten coating as it emerges from the coating bath are ineffective for coatings containing greater than 72% aluminum. It has been found that the addition of 0.04 to 0.32% magnesium in hot-dip aluminum-zinc coating baths will substantially enhance the resistance of the coating to corrosion flaking.

    摘要: In the production of coined sheet products, particularly sheet steel, rolling pressures sufficient to produce a decorative pattern often result in the formation of undesirable "spikes" (2) on the sheet surface. These "spikes" can require numerous paint coatings for effective coverage. Spikes are eliminated by use of a roll design in which the trailing sides (3) peaks of the pattern roll are provided with a severely sloping draft angle (S), the minimum angle for "spike" elimination being a function of the roll diameter, the coined depth, (h) of the pattern, the thickness and hardness of the sheet itself and the ratio of the volume of the pattern peaks to the pattern valleys.

    摘要: In order to resist alteration of the spring forces utilized for applying seal pressure between the valve bodies in sliding gate valves for molten metal pouring, particularly those of the manually operated type, the valve support plate and the mounting plate are arranged to form a narrow slot that receives the valve actuator and presents insufficient clearance to permit excessive relative displacement between the valve members. The valve further incorporates releasable attachments, two of which serve as hinge connections for the support plate while the other serves as a latching member. Each of the attachments comprise clevis-mounted eyebolts in which the clevises have predetermined dimensions to establish a fixed, pre-set distance between the plates upon reassembly of the valve after opening and thus insure repeatability of the spatial relationships between the valve bodies and, concomitantly, of the seal pressure between the members.

    摘要: Methods and apparatus for the suppression of fume from a body of molten metal is described. One method involves blanketing the molten metal bath with a mixture of pressurized inert gas and finely divided or atomized particles of water. The inert gas may be argon, nitrogen or steam. An apparatus for carrying out this method comprises an array of nozzles supported adjacent the mouth of a receiver vessel and connected to sources of the inert gas and water.
    Another method entails burning fuel in the immediate vicinity of the molten metal surface to consume and/or displace ambient air thereby to starve the bath of oxygen and, concomitantly, to suppress the formation of the fume-producing metallic oxide.
    An apparatus for carrying out this method, particularly adapted for suppressing fume generated in the flow of molten metal through the runner system of a blast furnace cast house, includes a burner from which fuel and air in predetermined amounts are discharged to create flame and disperse it along the axis of the runners. The flame operates to consume ambient air in the combustion process thereby to starve the region over the metal streams of oxygen that would otherwise combine with metal vapors to create fume-producing metallic oxides.
