The spring element (28) is a substantially planar, tortuous member (92), which is made of a suitable material such as high tensile steel, and which is disposed in a lower portion of the trough member. Preferably, the spring element lays along the bottom (72) of a generally flat-bottomed trough member (40, 42). The driving mechanism (90), which may take the form of a mechanically driven sprocket (96), moves the spring element (28) along the bottom (72) of and through the trough member (40, 42) to move the feed (24) through the trough member (40, 42) to the various poultry cages (30), floor animals or the like.

Each link is cruciform, comprising a body 26 and a cross-piece 28. Coupling formations 32 and 34 of the body enable the links to be interconnected by pivot pins 24. The cross-pieces present feed-engaging side faces 70 and 72 which are raked back from lowermost edges of the cross-piece to give a scraping action in sliding along the bottom 14 of a feed trough 10. The bodies 26 and cross-pieces 28 of the chain have sufficient height for the chain to form a grid which compartmentalises the trough to inhibit flicking and consequent wastage of the feed by the birds.
