A trawl door (10) for pelagic fishing comprises an accurately shaped main deflector portion (24) provided with a leading edge lift enhancing structure constituted by a plurality of slats which form leading edge slats (20,22). At least the main deflector portion, as preferably also the slats are formed of plate metal for ease of construction. The preferred embodiment is a V-shaped trawl door made up of two sections of door.

A trawl door (20, 60) or a paravane (120, 140) having at least one main deflector (22, 22U, 22L) includes a permeable structure disposed adjacent to and separated from an outer surface (34) of the main deflector (22, 22U, 22L). The permeable structure extends from near a trailing edge (26, 26U, 26L) of the main deflector (22, 22U, 22L) over and separated from the outer surface (34) toward the main deflector's leading edge (24, 24U, 24L). In one embodiment of the permeable structure, a plurality of apertures (54, 56) pierce a perforated slat (52, 52U, 52L) thereby establishing a porous surface adjacent to the outer surface (34) of the main deflector (22, 22U, 22L). Adding the permeable structure perforated slat (52, 52U, 52L) to a trawl door (20, 60) increases the trawl door's stability when the trawl door is towed through water at a high angle of attack, and also reduces the trawl door's drag when operating at a high angle of attack.

A trawl door for pelagic fishing comprises an accurately shaped main deflector portion (24, 25) provided with a leading edge lift enhancing structure constituted by a plurality of slats (20, 22) which form leading edge slats. At least the main deflector portion, as preferably also the slats are formed of plate metal for ease of construction. The preferred embodiment is a V-shaped trawl door made up of two sections (28, 29) of door.

The invention relates to an otter board (1) with a generally oval contour, having a length to height ratio of approximately 1.3 to 1.5 inclusive, with a pair of dished foils (3, 4), whilst the remainder (2) of the wall thereof is solid. The intermediate foil (3) is provided with a bracket (7) on the ventral face thereof, for the attachment of a trawl warp, the opposing face of the board called the dorsal face comprises fixing means for the attachment to the trawl bridle. The transverse section of the above has the approximate form of a dihedral, the intersection of which runs horizontally, essentially along the medial longitudinal axis thereof, the angle of which lies between approximately 165° and 175° and is open to the dorsal face thereof. Said board is suitable for low-speed fishing, particularly fishing for shrimps in cold waters.

An improved self-spreading trawl (13) includes first panels (56T, 56B) which when towed through a body of water (12) separate on opposite sides of the trawl's central axis (62). Portions of panels (56T, 56B) form portions of the trawl's mouth (26). The trawl (13) also includes second panels (56P, 56S) which separate on opposite sides of the central axis (62) from the sides occupied by the panels (56T, 56B). Portions of panels (56P, 56S) form portions of the trawl's mouth (26). Regions of panels (56P, 56S) generate more outwardly directed lift than corresponding regions of the panels (56T, 56B). When towed through the body of water (12): a) a distance separating the panels (56P, 56S) exceeds; b) a distance separating the panels (56T, 56B). Also a braided product strand which includes at least 3 plaits (76, 102), at least one (76) of which is larger than the others (102), advantageously exhibits less drag and vibration.

Deflector device for lateral spreading of equipment being towed in water by a vessel, such as seismic exploration, fishing or mine sweeping. The device comprises at least one cylinder (35A-C) adapted to have its axis standing generally vertically in the water during towing. The cylinder or cylinders (35A-C) is/are rotatable and there is provided at least one motor for rotation of the cylinder or cylinders.
