A butterfly net (10) is disclosed comprising a stocking cap-shaped netting (18) open at one end thereof. The netting (18) has a hem-line loop (20) formed along the periphery of the open end. A flexible strip of finite (14) length has one portion thereof threaded through the loop, and a second portion (22) thereof extending outside the loop. The butterfly net (10) is provided with an elongated handle member (12) having a longitudinally extending opening (28). Guide means (30) are provided adjacent the opening for guiding the second portion (22) of the strip (14) into the opening. An actuator (42) is slidably mounted on the handle member (12), and is coupled to the second portion (32) of the strip. The actuator (42) is movable on the handle (12) between a first position in which the one portion is of one length and the open end of the netting (18) is fully opened, and a second position in which the one portion is of a smaller length and the open end of the netting (18) is at least partially closed for capturing a butterfly.
