A self-contained button attachment assembly comprising a fastener dispensing tool (11) which includes a hollow, open-ended, unitary housing (19) generally cylindrical in shape. Four hollow, slotted needles (27-1 through 27-4) are fixedly mounted in the housing. Four ejector rods (35-1 through 35-4) are slidably mounted within the four needles, the four ejector rods being fixedly mounted at their respective top ends on a pusher plate (37) that is slidably mounted within the housing and is accessible through the open top end thereof. The assembly also comprises a conventional garment button (17) of the type having four transverse openings. The button is positioned and releasably retained within the housing by a circumferential lip (25). The assembly further comprises a pair of fasteners (15-1, 15-2), each fastener comprising a U-shaped flexible filament (43) and a pair of transverse feet (45-1, 45-2) which are disposed at opposite ends of the filament and extend perpendicularly to the plane of the filament.

In one embodiment, the needle (11) comprises a solid elongated member (13) terminating at its front end in a tip (15) adapted to penetrate a desired article and a chamber (17) adapted to receive a cross-bar (B) of a plastic fasterner (P). The changer (17) includes a front end (21), a rear end (23), an open top (25) and an open bottom (27). The open top (25) is spaced rearwardly from the tip (15) and is appropriately sized and shaped to permit the insertion and removal of a cross-bar (B) into and from the chamber (17). Front end (21) is downwardly angled towards tip (15) to releasably engage top surface (TF) of the front end of cross-bar (B), and rear end (23) has a pair of walls intersecting in a V-shape to releasably engage bar (B) to prevent the cross-bar (B) from being pulled out of chamber (17) through open top (25) when low tension is applied to the flexible filament. When high tension is applied to the flexible filament, cross-bar (B) is caused to be pulled out of chamber (17) through open top (25).

To reduce the force necessary to anchor the double "T" bar attachments, the filament (28) of each attachment is made longer than the shortest (perpendicular) distance between the "T" bars (24:26) to avoid the necessity of stretching the filament (28) beyond its original length as it is dispensed. The filament (28) lies in the same plane as the "T" bars to permit it to be fabricated on conventional stretching equipment. Preferably, each end of the filament is formed at an acute angle relative to a line (33) perpendicular to the "T" bar to which it is attached. The attachments can be supplied in continuously connected ladder stock form (Fig. 12) or in a clip of parallel spaced attachments (Fig. 1), situated between connector bars. In clip form, the attachments are fed along a correspondingly shaped channel (18) through the housing (10:12). In order to reduce the peak force necessary to sever the "T" bars from the respective connector bars, blades (60:62) are located within the housing such that they cut at different times during the trigger stroke (Fig. 4).

Mit dem Verfahren soll eine wesentliche Verbilligung und Vereinfachung der Herstellung solcher Hohlnadeln erzielt werden, und zwar dadurch, daß der geschlitzte Führungskanal (10') mittels eines ein U-förmiges Schnittprofil (8) aufweisenden Scheibenfräsers (7) zunächst in Form einer Längsnut (10) gefräst wird und daß danach die Randkanten (12,13,14,14') der U-förmigen Längsnut mittels eines Prägewerkzeuges (15) nach innen geprägt werden. Damit beim Fräsen der Längsnut (10) auch im dickeren Montageschaft (3) einprägbare Randkanten (14, 14') entstehen, wird ein Stufenfräser (7) verwendet, der im Montageschaft (3) eine Stufennut erzeugt, die außerhalb des dünneren Nadelquerschnittes (4) liegenden Radialbereiches breiter ist als in dem innerhalb des Nadelquerschnittes (4) liegenden Radialbereich.

The present invention relates to a fastener and clip for use in attaching a button to a garment or a piece of fabric. In one embodiment, the fastener (11) comprises a U-shaped flexible filament (13) and a pair of transverse feet (15-1, 15-2) disposed at opposite ends of the U-shaped flexible filament (13). The U-shaped filament (13) is generally rectangular in cross section, has a substantially uniform width, a thickness greatest in its arcuate region and least towards the feet. The feet (15-1, 15-2) are sized and shaped to fit through a button hole and securely engage a garment. To minimize contact with a person's skin, the feet (15-1, 15-2) are preferably shorter that the transverse bars of existing button fasteners and comparable in overall size to a knot of thread conventionnally used to secure buttons. The feet (15-1, 15-2) have rounded ends (21-1/21-2, 23-1/23-2), a flat top surface (19-1, 19-2) and a contoured bottom surface (25-1, 25-2) to minimize irradiation of a person's skin.

A fastener attaching tool (51, 101) and fastener clip (11, 131) for use therewith. The fastener clip (11, 131) includes a plurality of fasteners (13, 133) which may be used, for example, in attaching a button to a garment or a piece of fabric, each fastener (13, 133) comprising a filament having a foot (17-1, 137) at one end. The fastener clip (11, 131) also comprises at least one runner bar (19-1, 141), each fastener (13, 133) being connected to the runner bar (19-1, 141) by a severable connector post (23-1, 143). The fastener attaching tool (51, 101) includes a pair of needles (57-1, 57-2). Each needle (57-1, 57-2) has a knife edge formed on its side which is adapted to sever a connector post (23-1, 143) from its associated runner bar (19-1, 141). The fastener attaching tool (51, 101) also includes an ejector mechanism (61) which is slidably mounted back and forth within the body of the fastener attaching tool (51-101) and is rearwardly biased by a spring (59). The ejector mechanism is manually operable from the rear of the body of the fastener attaching tool (51-101) and includes a pair of ejector rods (93-1, 93-2) which are slidable back and forth within the bores of the needles (57-1, 57-2).
