An improved method and apparatus is provided as a system to enhance skin appearance and health, in which skin is cleaned (or exfoliated) and conditioned by use of microelements (12) affixed to a base element (14) or hand-held patch. The dimensions of the microelements (12) are controlled so as to remove a certain number of layers of skin cells and to accumulate those skin cells, along with other foreign substances, into areas between the microelements. In addition, a conditioning compound or therapeutic active can be applied to the exfoliated skin to enhance the skin. Moreover, the amount of accumulated skin cells represents a self-limiting maximum quantity that cannot be substantially exceeded regardless of the number of attempts by a user to re-use the microstructure apparatus. Some of the microstructures are designed with very close-packed microelements, which in some cases have flexible substrates.

An improved method and apparatus is provided as a system to deliver a composition, preferably a medical or pharmaceutical composition or active, through the stratum corneum of skin, without introducing bleeding or damage to tissue, and absent pain or other trauma. The dimensions and shapes of the microelements are controlled so as to control the penetration depth into the skin. The microelements can be 'hollow' such that passageways are created therethrough to allow the composition to flow from a chamber, through the microelements, and into the skin. Alternatively, the microelements can be 'solid,' and the composition is applied directly to the skin just before or just after the microelements are applied to the skin surface to create the openings in the stratum corneum.

The dermaplaning device is configured to limit the depth that the blade can penetrate the skin which makes the device safe for use by non-professionals. The dermaplaning device is electrically powered to cause the blade to vibrate at a predetermined frequency. Various embodiments of the hand-held dermaplaning device are disclosed for vibrating the blade. In accordance with an important aspect of the invention, the blade includes a safety guard for limiting the amount of penetration of the blade into the facial skin to enable the device to be safely used by non-professionals.

In a method for making a microedged shaving surface (10) a substrate (12) is provided having a polymer layer applied on at least one surface thereof. An edge layer of material is applied over the polymer layer and has a hardness sufficient to support a cutting edge. At least one surface of the substrate is coated with a photoresist material that is positioned over the edge layer. The photresist material is cured to render areal portions thereof substantially impervious to removal by etching. The photoresist material is then etched so that the areas adjacent to the substantially impervious areas create a plurality of re-entrant profiles. Any remaining photoresist material is stripped away and the edge layer is etched to the exposed discrete shaving elements, each having a peripheral edge and a sharpness sufficient to cut hair. The substrate around the discrete shaving elements is also exposed so that the cutting edges are offset from at least one surface of the substrate.

Hair removal devices comprising a plurality of micro-blades and methods for their fabrication, include, for example, microelectronic manufacturing techniques. Preferred "blades" have at least one edge with a radius of curvature not greater than about 1000 angstroms, preferably not greater than about 500 angstroms. Alternative embodiments of the present invention comprise a relatively high number of abrasion elements for hair removal. In addition to blades and/or abrasion elements, shaving devices of this invention can comprise skin flow control elements which control the flow of hair across the shaving device and thereby control the angle at which the blade edges or abrasion elements contact the hair. Another aspect of the present invention comprises blades having cutting depth which are much smaller than previously known shaving devices. For example, the cutting depth of one or more blades is not greater than about 75 microns, or is even less. Shaving devices are formed on rigid or flexible substrates using one or more of the following techniques: photolithography, wet chemical etching, dry etching, or material deposition techniques.
