Abstract: Described herein is a hand-held catheter force control device comprising: an elongate base sized to be hand-held, the base defining a longitudinal axis between first and second opposing longitudinal ends; a linear actuator mounted to the base to provide linear motion substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the base; a sheath clamp coupled to the base, the sheath clamp sized to fixedly capture a sheath handle; a catheter clamp coupled to the linear actuator, the catheter clamp sized to fixedly capture a catheter; and the catheter clamp aligned to be substantially co-axial with the sheath clamp. Systems and methods incorporating the catheter force control device are also described.

Abstract: A needle for invasive medical use includes a long extended cylindrical needle shaft having an axis and an outer surface area, with a short shaft end at a first end of the shaft with a beveled tip with a pointed end, and a needle hub attached to a second end of the shaft including a device to indicate the location of the shaft end during use inside a body. The needle has a flexible joint with a notch within the shaft at the beginning of the shaft end. The device is a displacement sensor for detecting a displacement of the shaft end relative to the rest of the shaft resulted from a force applied to the shaft end when the needle hub is moved and a signal conductor to transmit the detected signals. The invention further describes a needle assembly comprising such a needle and a syringe attached to said needle hub, whereas an evaluation unit is connected to the signal conductor.

Abstract: A surgical instrument (10), such as an endoscopic or laparoscopic instrument, comprising, according to various embodiments, an end effector (12) comprising at least one sensor transponder (368). The surgical instrument also comprises a shaft (8) having a distal end connected to the end effector (12) and a handle (6) connected to a proximate end of the shaft (8). Abstract: An electrosurgical system includes an energy applicator adapted to direct energy to tissue, an electrosurgical power generating source, and a surface-contact detection device. The surface-contact detection device is operably associated with the energy applicator. The surface-contact detection device is communicatively-coupled to the electrosurgical power generating source. The surface-contact detection device includes at least one optical transmitter to generate optical signals, a lens member configured to reflect optical signals generated by the optical transmitter when the lens member is disposed in contact with tissue, and at least one optical receiver to receive optical signals reflected by the lens member. The electrosurgical power generating source is adapted to transmit energy to the energy applicator when it is determined that the lens member is disposed in contact with tissue.
