A U-shaped water transfer tube (40) is positioned within the reservoir having an inlet (48) adjacent to the bottom of the reservoir and an outlet (54) positioned externally of the reservoir. The application of microwave energy heats the water within the reservoir, initiating a pumping system that transfers the water from the reservoir (14) through the transfer tube (40). The water exhausted from the transfer tube is directed onto the coffee grounds within the basket (30). The brewed coffee, created by the contact between the heated water and the coffee grounds, passes from the basket into the carafe (16).
