The invention provides a coffee machine for preparing coffee which is extracted under pressure and has a low particle content. The coffee machine differs from the machines which are known in the prior art for extracting coffee under pressure in that it contains a filter element which is intended for reducing the particle content in coffee, is arranged downstream of the brewing sieve and is fluidically connected to the brewing sieve and the outlet. By means of the filter element, coffee which is extracted under pressure at the brewing unit can be filtered before being discharged at the outlet, in which case suspended particles and emulsified oils of a certain magnitude are separated off from the coffee by the filter element to produce a new kind of coffee. It is additionally possible for the coffee machine to provide classic coffee which is extracted under pressure, since the coffee can also be directed past the filter element by the brewing unit, i.e. it need not necessarily flow to the outlet via the filter element.

A method for making ice coffee comprises the following steps: extracting coffee by using water at a temperature that is in a range of 35°C to 55°C, at a normal brewing pressure that is in a range of ambient pressure to 1.5 bar, and at an extraction time that is shorter than 60 seconds, and supplying a quantity of ice to the beverage which is obtained as a result of this extraction process, in order to get the ice coffee at a temperature at which it is ready to drink. An appliance for carrying out the method may also be adapted to make hot coffee, so that a user may choose which type of coffee he/she would like to receive from the appliance.

An apparatus for making espresso coffee is described. The apparatus comprises a support frame (2) upon which an open-topped cylinder (3) is vertically mounted. A pot containing a quantity of ground coffee may be attached to the base of the cylinder, and the frame (2) and cylinder (3) provide sufficient space to insert a cup or cups below the pot. A piston with a piston head (22) is adapted to fit in the cylinder (3) and a pair of levers (6, 7) pivoted to the frame and pivotally linked to the piston enable the piston head to move up and down in the cylinder (3) by actuation of the levers (6, 7). In use, hot water is poured into the cylinder (3) and downward pressure on the levers (6, 7) expels the hot water under pressure through the ground coffee and the freshly made coffee passes out of an outlet in the base of the pot and into a waiting cup.

The invention relates to a coffee machine, particularly an espresso machine, comprising: a brewing device (6) for producing and discharging coffee via a coffee draw-off nozzle (11); a hot water boiler (2) having a fresh water supply line (1) and a hot water line (10) that leads into a brewing chamber (5) of the brewing device (6), and; a control unit (4). The coffee draw-off can be controlled by said control unit (4). A heating element (13) is placed on the hot water line (10) between the hot water boiler (2) and the brewing chamber (5). Said heating element enables the water flowing from the hot water boiler (2) and into the brewing chamber (5) to be brought to brewing temperature. This permits the brewing temperature to be maintained at a virtually constant value whereby improving the quality of the drawn-off coffee.
