The invention consists of a new obstetrical vacuum extractor which includes a bell-shaped fetal contact cup made of flexible material, with a hollow and substantially rigid stem, a pull-sensing handle grip attached to the end of the stem, and a tube connected with one end to the cup stem and with the other to a vacuum source. The pull-sensing grip contains electronic hardware whose purpose is to reduce the risk of fetal trauma caused by frequent cup detachment (“pop-off”) and excessive traction force, during a vacuum-assisted delivery. The hardware includes a strain gauge to measure the traction force applied to the vacuum extractor during a delivery, a speaker to alert the doctor when the traction force approaches a level sufficient to cause a fetal cup “pop-off”, and a transceiver for the wireless transmission of the traction data to a receiver connected to a lap-top computer, which generates a graphic representation of such data, and emits a warning signal when pre-set time limit of continuous cup application on the fetal scalp is reached.

The fetal contact cup portion of a fetal vacuum cup (150) has an inside surface which when applied to a fetal head, defines a fetal contact chamber (228) with the fetal head. One end of a tube is attached to the fetal contact cup (400) such that vacuums within the tube are applied within the fetal contact cup. The other end of the tube can be connected with a vacuum source (120), and with a handle. The tube has a very small average outside diameter compared with conventional fetal vacuum tubes. Thus the fetal vacuum cup (400) is less intrusive during insertion, and is more easily maneuverable, especially when the fetus is mal-presenting in, for example, the high occipito posterior or high occipito lateral positions. Flexible, collapsible, dome or cylinder-shaped bonnet (10) that provides a substantially airtight fit to a fetal head and utilizes frictional and internally-created vacuum forces for assisting childbirth. The bonnet is manually inserted and rolled over the cranium of the fetus, stopping short of the eyes and the ears. Friction and internally created vacuum forces are created when the bonnet is pulled, thus securing the bonnet to the fetus's head and allowing orientation and delivery. The device is comprised of a dome or cylinder-shaped body made of a collapsible elastic material, an optional raised "lip" (11) located on the exterior of the open end, and may have a mechanical extension (15) attached to the closed end. System embodiments allow for the attachment to the exterior of the closed end grommets and/or mechanical extensions that will irreversibly stretch, lengthen, and expose warning alerts in the event that excessive longitudinal force is applied. The bonnet is a significant improvement because it allows a firmer grip on the fetus's head with less danger of damage to either the mother or the fetus. Thus traction and rotational forces may be safely applied to a fetus without the need to use forceps or hard suction cups.
