The implant has an abutment head at one end and a threaded post projecting from the head and designed for threaded engagement in the jaw bone, the head having an outer locating surface portion. The retention member is generally cup-shaped with a first end and a peripheral skirt extending from the first end to form a cavity, the skirt having an inner locating surface which is engaged over the outer locating surface portion of the head. The head may also have a socket in which a post extending from an inner end of the retention member engages as the parts are moved into releasable snap engagement.

The bore is preferably shaped by a shaping drill that has a profile that generally mimics the profile of the implant. The technical field of the invention generally concerns expandable dental implant for receiving and supporting a dental prosthesis. The expandable dental implant, securable within a bore formed into bone of a patient's jaw, includes an elongated, hollow, tubular barrel (32) having both an attachment end (34) and an insertion end (36). The barrel has both a threaded interior surface (42) for screwing the implant into the bore, and a threaded exterior surface (44) for receiving a threaded expander screw (62). The barrel is pierced about its insertion end by a plurality of radial slits (52) spaced circumferentially around the barrel. The interior surface of the barrel at the insertion end is formed with a smaller diameter than the diameter of the interior surface of the barrel at the attachment end. The expander screw and the interior surface of the barrel are shaped so advancement of the expander screw along the barrel toward the insertion end causes an end surface (74) of the expander screw to collide with the interior surface of the barrel, and to expand the insertion end outward into the surrounding bone.

Each pair of expander assemblies includes one expandable device and one sliding tube assembly. Receptors are provided to be attached to the bicuspid crowns and the molar crowns, and corresponding connectors are provided to be attached to the screw devices and sliding tube assemblies for connection thereof to the crowns.
