Ventricular assist devices are used to pump blood in conjunction with the natural heat to assist it. Blood is pumped by subjecting a membrane in the VAD to alternate high and low pressures. The present invention provides a driver for at least one pneumatically-actuated ventricular assist device (VAD), comprising a housing adapted to be carried by a patient, the housing mounting: a single pump arranged to generate gas flow for performing both the blood-filling and the blood-emptying operations of the at least one VAD, a switching valve for alternately communicating the inlet and outlet of the pump with the at least one VAD, vacuum relief means also communicating with the inlet of said pump so that the at least one VAD is subjected to a predetermined negative pressure when performing blood-filling, a battery, and a controller for controlling the operation of the driver. The use of a single pump provides a lighter, more compact VAD driver than the prior art drivers which use two pumps. The housing mounting all the necessary equipment for the driver enables the driver to be fully portable and carried by a patient, thus increasing their quality of life. In a preferred embodiment the VAD communicates with the inlet of the pump via a plenum chamber (1) at low pressure (partial vacuum) and the pump (2) is fully enclosed within the plenum chamber.

A rotary pump mechanism (1) which is comprised of a coupling section (2) that couples an impeller (7) and a driving member (16) for driving the coupling section and, in turn, the impeller. The coupling section incorporates most of the components (19, 30) of the pump that wear out and are expensive. As a result, the impeller can be disposed of without disposing of other components. The coupling section can also be changed for continuous operation of a single impeller. Although the preferred application of the invention is in the area of pumping blood and other biological fluids, the disclosed invention has utility in any application where it is desirable to turn an ''impeller-like'' element.

An auxiliary mechanical heart (10) consisting of a blood tube (14) by which the blood ejected from the heart ventricle is fed into the auxiliary mechanical heart; a one-way valve (22) provided in the blood tube which opens exclusively toward the auxiliary mechanical heart side; an afterload regulatory chamber (11) in which the blood ejected from the heart ventricle is tentatively pooled; a pressure sensor (23) by which the pressure in the afterload regulatory chamber (11) is detected; a blood pump (25); a driving controller (26) for the pump; a blood tube (16) for the arterial blood; and a probe (27) and a blood flow meter (28) for measuring the blood flow rate of the blood pump (25). The pressure in the afterload regulatory chamber (11) is controlled so that the one-way valve (22) is closed in the ventricular diastolic phase while, in the ventricular systolic phase, the whole blood ejected from the heart ventricle flows toward the afterload regulatory chamber (11). Thus, this novel auxiliary mechanical heart is elaborated so that the self-heart can eject the blood at a low ejection resistance and effect sufficient dilation and contraction.

A ventricular assist device 10 includes a blood conduit 14, which carries the blood ejected from the ventricle to the ventricular assist device, a one-way valve 22, which is provided in the blood conduit and can open only toward the ventricular assist device, an afterload-controlling chamber 11, which temporarily stores the blood ejected from the ventricle, a pressure sensor 23, which measures the pressure in the afterload-controlling chamber, a blood pump 25 and a control unit 26 thereof, a blood conduit 16 that carries the blood to an artery, and a probe 27 for measuring blood flow rate and a flowmeter 28, which control the flow rate of the blood pump 25. The pressure of the afterload-controlling chamber 11 is controlled so as to keep the one-way valve closed during ventricular diastole, and also controlled so as to direct all the blood ejected from the ventricle into the afterload-controlling chamber 11 during ventricular systole. Therefore, a new ventricular assist device can be provided, which enables the native heart to eject blood with very low ejection resistance and ensures sufficient ventricular relaxation and filling.

Presently disclosed is a hydraulic pump device and its use thereof, especially in a fluid delivery system. In one embodiment, the fluid delivery system is an inexpensive, single-use device for slow dosing medicament applications. The fluid delivery system may employ a spring-compressed bellows crank or other combination of simple mechanisms operating according to the well-known peristaltic principle to force a volume of ultrapure bio-inert hydraulic fluid through an aperture, thereby expanding one chamber of a two chamber hydraulic cylinder. The second, fluid storage chamber, containing the medicament, is emptied through a conventional orifice in response to the expansion of the pump chamber. The medicament may thence flow through any suitable infusion set into a patient removeably attached thereto.
