A tracheostomy is performed using an access device and a separate ventilation device. The access device is introduced through a surgical opening in the tracheal wall and has an anchor which is expanded in situ to hold the access device in place. The ventilation device is introduced through a passage in the access device and has an expandable cuff which is oriented above the access point through the tracheal wall. A concavity in the expandable cuff collects body secretions, and other materials from the oral and nasal cavities and/or gastro-intestinal reflux into the trachea, and the collected secretions are removed by aspiration through a lumen provided in the ventilation device. A one-way valve may be provided in the expandable cuff in order to permit exhalation through the larynx to assist in speech.

An apparatus and method for providing a percutaneous or non-dissection opening into a body cavity or hollow viscus. A needle (10) is attached to a syringe (38) for insertion within the body cavity. Operation of the syringe confirms proper location of the needle within the body cavity. The needle is structurally weakened along a longitudinal line and includes elements (22) operable to split the needle along the line to provide a longitudinal slot. An elongated dilator (44) slidably fits through a side opening in a flexible tube (52) and extends through the distal end of the tube. A leader (72) attached to the distal end of the dilator is adapted for insertion through the bore of the needle, the slot (14) in the needle enabling lateral separation of the leader for removal of the needle from the body cavity. The dilator is adapted to be forceably inserted into the body cavity along the path defined by the leader, and is thereafter removable through the side opening in the tube. The tube is thereafter further insertable into the body cavity.

The present invention provides an intubation device including a nasal endotracheal tube having a proximal, relative to a person inserting the nasal endotracheal tube, end and a distal end; and an introducer including an elongated member having a proximal open end and a distal blunt end, the introducer proximal open end including a hollow mouth having sidewalls for receiving and holding the distal end of the endotracheal tube. The dilator/introducer is simply a tube, solid or hollow having a hollow proximal end that will hold a distal end of a nasal endotracheal tube in place. It will act as a dilator, and once the distal end of the endotracheal tube is past the nasopharynx and is visualized in the oropharynx, the "dilator" is removed and typically discarded. A method of use of the intubation device is also disclosed.
