Friction stir processing (FSP) provides a hardened golf club face that more efficiently transfers momentum between the golf club and the ball, increasing the launch velocity so as to provide increased loft (for a given distance traveled by the ball). The FSP hardened face is also more resistant to wear so that the golf club provides more consistent performance and lasts longer. A practice club having a friction stir processed sweet spot on the face may enable the golfer to feel whether the ball has been hit by the sweet spot.

Die Schlägerbeschichtungen werden bevorzugt mittels des Hochgeschwindigkeits-Flammspritzverfahrens oder mittels des Kaltgasspritzverfahrens aufgebracht. Für die Beschichtung der Golfschläger mittels thermischen Spritzens können als Spritzmaterialien insbesondere Metalle, Metallegierungen, Oxide (insbesondere Al 2 O 3 und/oder TiO 2 ), Carbide, Boride, Kunststoffe oder Mischungen der vorgenannten Stoffe verwendet werden.

Die Erfindung betrifft einen Golfschläger mit einer Schlagfläche zum Schlagen von Golfbällen und ferner ein Verfahren zum Beschichten eines Golfschlägers zumindest im Bereich der Schlagfläche mittels eines thermischen Spritzverfahrens. Erfindungsgemäß wird zur Erhöhung der Standzeiten vorgeschlagen, daß der Golfschläger im Bereich der Schlagfläche zumindest teilweise eine Beschichtung umfaßt, die entweder spannungsneutral ausgebildet ist oder Druckspannungen aufweist. Die Beschichtung wird mittels eines thermischen Spritzverfahrens mit mitteleren Spritzpartikelgeschwindigkeiten über 500 m/s aufgebracht. Die Beschichtung weist bevorzugt Druckspannungen zwischen 0 und 600 MPa auf. Als Spritzpartikel eignen sich insbeondere Hartmetalle, Cermets und/oder Oxide.
