The present invention relates to a method for the combined production of hydrogen and carbon dioxide from a hydrocarbon mixture, in which the hydrocarbon mixture is reformed to produce a syngas which is cooled, then enriched with H 2 and CO 2 , optionally dried, and treated in a PSA hydrogen purification unit to produce hydrogen, the PSA offgas being treated to capture the CO 2 and to supply an offgas. This offgas is again treated to supply a stream enriched with H 2 and CO 2 which is returned to the PSA, where it constitutes a second feed distinct from the main feed.

A method of pressure swing adsorption (PSA) for producing a gas stream enriched in a compound X from a feed gas stream, implementing at least 2 adsorbers, each adsorber being subjected to a pressure cycle having a high pressure and a low pressure and comprising the following successive steps: a) adsorption at the high pressure of the cycle, producing the gas stream enriched in compound X, b) depressurisation to the low pressure of the cycle, producing at least a part of an elution gas, c) elution at the low pressure by means of the elution gas, d) repressurisation to the high pressure, characterised in that: the pressure cycle has a phase time corresponding to the duration of a pressure cycle divided by the number of adsorbers, and the pressure of the pressure cycle located between the high pressure and the low pressure of the pressure cycle is modified so as to keep the phase time of the PSA equal to or within ± 5% of the nominal phase time, corresponding to the phase time of the PSA in design conditions, during at least a part of the range of variation of the operating conditions.

The basic steps of the cycles include an adsorption vessel prepressurisation step (R), a cocurrent nonadsorbed gas production step (A), a cocurrent purge step with strongly adsorbed gas product (P) and a countercurrent depressurisation step (E) which produces the strongly adsorbed gas product that is used in the cocurrent purge step. In addition to the basic steps, a first depressurisation equalization step (EDI) precedes or follows the cocurrent purge step (P) and a corresponding first pressurisation equalization step (EPI) follows the countercurrent depressurisation step (E). The cycle optionally includes one or two further depressurisation equalization steps before the cocurrent purge step and one or two corresponding pressurisation equalization steps after the first pressurisation equalization step.

Hydrocarbon and steam are introduced into a reformer 102 to form a gas mixture including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, water vapour and hydrogen. After removal of the water vapour, the gas mixture is passed to a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) plant 122 comprising first and second arrays 124 and 126 respectively of adsorber vessels. The gas mixture is separated in the plant 122 into a non-adsorbed hydrogen product, a carbon dioxide-enriched fraction, a part of which is recycled to the reformer 102, and a carbon monoxide-enriched fraction withdrawn from an intermediate location of the plant 122. The carbon monoxide-enriched fraction is separated in a further PSA plant 148 to produce a carbon monoxide product. The kind of PSA plant 122 may be used outside this process to separate gas mixtures containing three or more components.

The present invention generally relates to vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) processes and apparatus to recover carbon dioxide having a purity of approximately >90 mole% from streams containing at least carbon dioxide and hydrogen (e.g., syngas). The feed to the CO2 VPSA unit (21) can be at super ambient pressure. The CO2 VPSA unit (21) produces three streams, a H2-enriched stream,(6) a H2- depleted stream and a CO2 product stream (4). When the CO2 VPSA unit (21) is installed between an SMR/shift reactor (24) and a H2 PSA unit (22), hydrogen recovery is expected to be increased by extracting CO2, thereby increasing hydrogen partial pressure in the H2 PSA feed. The stream from the CO2 VPSA unit, normally used as fuel, is recycled as feed to increase CO2 recovery. The recovered CO2 can be further upgraded, sequestered or used in applications such as enhanced oil recovery (EOR).
