A product gas (Gpro) is separated from a raw material gas (Gmat) by the PSA method with a plurality of adsorption columns (A-C) filled with an adsorbing agent. The separation of the product gas (Gpro) is carried out by repeating a cycle consisting of an absorption step, a pressure reduction step, a desorption step, a washing step and a pressure elevation step. In the pressure reduction step, a remaining gas (Grem) is introduced from an adsorption column (C) to another adsorption column (B) as a washing gas. The remaining gas (Grem) is introduced in a volume 2 to 7 times that of the adsorbing agent charged in the adsorption column (B), in terms of that at room temperature and under atmospheric pressure. For the purpose of removing both of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from a raw material gas (Gmat) by using one type of adsorbing agent, use is made of a zeolite which has been exchanged with lithium in a proportion of 95 % and has a faujasite structure of a Si/Al ratio of 1 to 1.5.

Hydrocarbon and steam are introduced into a reformer 102 to form a gas mixture including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, water vapour and hydrogen. After removal of the water vapour, the gas mixture is passed to a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) plant 122 comprising first and second arrays 124 and 126 respectively of adsorber vessels. The gas mixture is separated in the plant 122 into a non-adsorbed hydrogen product, a carbon dioxide-enriched fraction, a part of which is recycled to the reformer 102, and a carbon monoxide-enriched fraction withdrawn from an intermediate location of the plant 122. The carbon monoxide-enriched fraction is separated in a further PSA plant 148 to produce a carbon monoxide product. The kind of PSA plant 122 may be used outside this process to separate gas mixtures containing three or more components.

A process and system for separating the components of a gas mixture by PSA in a four-vessel adsorption system operated as two pairs of adsorption vessels. The vessels of each pair are operated 180º out of phase, such that one vessel of a pair is in the adsorption mode while the other vessel of the pair is undergoing adsorbent regeneration. The apparatus includes the two pairs of adsorption vessels, typically an intermediate gas storage reservoir which is used to temporarily store gas removed from the non-adsorbed gas outlet end of the adsorption vessels for use in various steps of the process, one gas blower and a pair of vacuum pumps. The adsorption cycle is such that the pairs of adsorption vessels are operated out of phase relative to each other and the blower and both vacuum pumps can be in continuous operation throughout the process. The process and system are particularly well adapted to the separation of nitrogen from oxygen by vacuum swing adsorption.

A gas mixture comprising at least three components (e.g. hydrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide) is separated into three different fractions by pressure swing adsorption. A cycle of operations is performed including the step of passing the gas mixture through a first bed 210 of adsorbent and then a second bed 217 of adsorbent in series with the first bed 210. Both the beds comprise an adsorbent on which a second component (e.g. (O)) of the mixture is more strongly adsorbed than a first component (e.g. H₂) but less strongly adsorbed than a third component (e.g. CO₂). A first fraction enriched in the first component is withdrawn from the downstream end of the second bed 217. Admission of the gas mixture to the first bed 210 is stopped. A second fraction enriched in the second component is withdrawn from the upstream end of the second bed 217 and 236. A third fraction enriched in the third component is withdrawn from the upstream end of the first bed. There are typically four pairs of beds 210 and 217 in parallel with one another.
