Backflushing with internally mounted pistons (146, 46) and cylinders (42, 142) is provided in a pulp treating vertical vessel (11) such as a paper pulp thickener, diffuser, or displacement bleacher. First and second sets of screens (23, 25) are mounted on a supporting arm/conduit (16-20) within the vertical vessel, the first screens (23) mounted directly to the arms and the second screens (25) mounted on top of the first screens. A first cylinder (42) is connected at one open end (43) to the conduit and at the other open end (44) is exposed to the pulp within the vessel. A second cylinder (142) is mounted so that it is concentric with the first cylinder and both ends are in operative communication with the liquid conduit. A piston is mounted within each cylinder by a common vertically extending piston rod (47) which connects them. The pistons and cylinders have different effective diameters. Relative movement between the pistons and cylinders is effected periodically in order to force liquid from within the cylinders into the conduit and ultimately out the screens to provide backflushing of the screens, which prevents clogging.

The invention relates to a method for operating a plunger-type filter press (1). According to said method, the plunger (4) is advanced at a first speed (V1) in a first phase without applying pressure to the material (2) that is to be pressed when the pressing chamber (3) is partially filled while being advanced at a second speed (V2) in a second phase when hitting the material (2) that is to be pressed and applying pressure to the same, the second speed (V2) being substantially lower than the first speed (V1). The inventive operating method makes it possible to obtain a greater throughput while keeping the amount of sediment in the pressed liquid phase at the same low level such that a product of equal quality can be produced at an improved economic efficiency.

In an atmospheric diffuser for the treatment of paper pulp (thickening, bleaching, and/or washing) the flow of backflushing liquid is controlled so as to maximize the effective treatment of the pulp. The pulp passes upwardly in a vessel. A number of annular screen assemblies (10) are provided, with at least one screen (14, 15) associated with each screen assembly. The lower screen includes a barrier wall (16) with a passage (18, 19) in the barrier wall adjacent the bottom end of the screen. Liquid which flows through the screen must flow to the passage in order to be withdrawn from the vessel, as the screen is slowly moved upwardly. When the screen is rapidly moved downwardly to cause backflushing, the backflushing liquid at the top end of the screen is liquid that recently passed through the screen at that point, so the pulp at that point -- which is the cleanest along the length of the screen -- has a minimal chance of being contaminated. The barrier may be provided by a number of tubes (17) separated by webs, or a number of channels separated by webs. A baffle (20) may be mounted between each passage and screen to redirect the backflushing liquid so that it does not merely backflush the bottom portion of the screen.
