The flow rate of liquid, the rate of travel of the foraminous medium, and the differential pressure across the foraminous medium, as established by the pressure exerted by the flowing liquid on the foraminous medium and the relative pressure underneath the foraminous medium, are controlled at different locations along the length of the separation chamber to provide optimum steady-state separation for a given waste stream.

The invention discloses a machine for the filtering of solid, in particular fibrous, particles suspended in liquids, comprising a delivery chamber (2) collecting the liquid to be treated, a raceway (3) leading the liquid to be treated into a treatment chamber (4) having a cylindrical bottom (5), wherein there is at least one pair of revolving filters (6, 7), an overflow chamber (16) connected with a recycling tank and an area (21) for the discharge of the recovered solid particles. In said machine each filter (12) has a surface in the shape of a truncated cone and its horizontal axis is essentially perpendicular to the flow direction of the liquid to be treated, said two filters are coaxial with each other and face each other, so as to form a concave space (20) therebetween. The taper of the filters causes the double effect of increasing the filtering performance of the machine and of avoiding its standstill when the delivery of liquid to be treated increases.

The invention relates to a disc filter for separating off liquids from a suspension (1), in particular a fibre suspension, having a container (2) for receiving the suspension (1), a hollow shaft (4) that is horizontally extending in the container (2) and is mounted so as to be rotatable, a plurality of liquid-permeable filter discs (3) that are spaced apart axially from one another and are fastened vertically on the hollow shaft (4), the interior of which filter discs is connected to the hollow shaft (4), at least one inlet (5) for the suspension (1) and matter outlets (6) arranged between the filter discs (3). The possible material density of the suspension (1) that is to be treated should be increased in that the suspension (1) is introduced via one or more inlets (5) into the suspension (1) of the container (2) at an inflow velocity of greater than 1.5 m/s and/or a part of the suspension (1) is removed via one or more outlets (9) of the container (2) and returned back to the container (2) via one or more inlets (5).
