The apparatus includes a first water tank 41 for receiving acid waste water, a second water tank 42 for subjecting the waste water from the first water tank 41 to solid-liquid separation and discharging supernatant liquid, an ion exchange tank 49 including ion exchange resin 93 and an aeration tube 88 for generating treated water through a membrane filter 91, a precipitation tank 50 for settling ion exchange resin 93, an air lift pump 95 for introducing ion exchange resin 93 from the precipitation tank 50 into the first water tank 41, and a return air lift pump 61 for returning ion exchange resin 93 from the second water tank 42 to the ion exchange tank 49. The ion exchange resin 49 acts to exchange ions with fluorine ions of treated water in the ion exchange tank 49 and is regenerated by acid waste water in the first water tank 41.

This invention relates to a process for carrying out an ion exchange process which involves providing two interacting sets of banks of continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR's) each containing a bed of ion exchange resin and causing the resin to move in one direction through each bank of reactors and the feed solution and/or or eluant in the opposite direction, in carrying out the process, a feed solution is introduced in a first reactor causing dissolved ions to be captured on the resin, eluant is introduced into a reactor upstream of the first reactor in the direction of resin movement causing ions captured on the resin to be removed into the eluant and eluant rich in ions removed from the resin will be taken from a reactor upstream of the reactor in which the eluant was introduced, for further processing. Thus, in this form of the invention there is, in effect, a loading bank of reactors in which ions from the feed solution are captured followed by a regenerating bank of reactors in which the eluant removes the ions captured on the resin and regenerates the resin.

In a method and apparatus for operating and regenerating ion exchange material a wash fluid or elution solution for rinsing the ion exchange material (1) is prepared, there is collected as a by-product of said preparation a first waste stream including cationic species to be eliminated, the ion exchange material (1) is subjected to a wash step in which there is eluted from the ion exchange material by the wash fluid or solution an anionic species to be eliminated and a second waste stream including the anionic species to be eliminated is obtained, the first waste stream (12) and the second waste stream (14) are combined to form a precipitate SW comprising a reaction product of said cationic species and said anionic species, and the precipitate is removed. The method provides an efficient means of eliminating undesired species from a circuit containing an ion exchange material to be regenerated.
