A crankshaft milling apparatus (10) is provided including a bed having a front and rear side. The bed (16) includes a slanted portion (22) on the rear side of the bed. A milling unit (14) is pivotally mounted on the rear slanted portion of the bed with the milling unit carrying the internal milling cutter (12) for encircling a crankshaft (30) extending along the front side (18) of the bed. The front side of the bed is open such that the milling cutter is easily accessible without having to climb into the machine.

A machining apparatus for circumferentially machining a stationary shaft-like work-piece (5). An inwardly moving tool slide rest (36) is mounted on a main spindle driving gear (17) which is driven by a common gear (24). A feed gear (22) is concentrically mounted with the main spindle driving gear (17) and is also driven by the common gear (24) but has a differing number of teeth from the main spindle driving gear (17). A cam surface in the feed gear interacts with a cam follower (44) in the main spindle driving gear (17) so that the relative rotation of the feed gear (22) and the main spindle driving gear (17) radially moves the cam follower (44), which radially drives the tool slide rest (36). The end of a machining cycle can be detected by a switch linked to the motion of the tool slide rest. Overload in the cutting can be detected by driving the main spindle driving gear and the feed gear with two gears, one of which can slip. Slippage indicates overload. If two such machining units are used, it is preferable that two pairs of guide surface be provided on the bed with adjacent ones of the machining units and the tail stocks holding the work-piece being mounted on different ones of the guide surfaces.
