The present invention relates to an indexable cutting insert for milling of a root between two cogs of a cog wheel comprising a top surface forming a chip surface, a bottom surface, a side surface connecting the top and bottom surfaces and forming a clearance surface, a first curved cutting edge and a second curved cutting edge formed at an intersection between the top surface and the side surface for milling of the root between the two cogs, wherein each of the cutting edges has an apex, and wherein the cutting insert has a two-fold rotational symmetry. It is an object to provide such an indexable cutting insert allowing a milling of cogs of a cog wheel having a desired precision. In order to solve this object it is suggested to design such a cutting insert, wherein the bottom surface further comprises a first planar abutment section and a second planar abutment section, a first groove extending in the first abutment section along an axis being parallel to a virtual line connecting the apexes of the first and second cutting edges, a second groove extending in the second abutment section along an axis being parallel to a virtual line connecting the apexes of the first and second cutting edges, a first stop section extending across the virtual line, and a second stop section extending across the virtual line, wherein the first stop section protrudes above the first abutment section, and wherein the second stop section protrudes above the second abutment section.

In the milling insert, there is included at least one cutting edge (5) that includes two main edges (6), which converge toward a nose edge (7). The cutting edge (5) is formed between two ground part surfaces situated on both sides of a cutting edge line, viz ., on one hand, a primary clearance surface (8), which is included in the clearance face (3) and is off-plane from a lower, secondary clearance surface (9), and, on the other hand, a peripheral chip surface (10), which is included in the upper side and situated on a higher level than a land (12) being inside, and which is narrower than the primary clearance surface (8) as well as has a width of at least 0,3 mm. A cutting edge, which extends between the edge side and the chip surface, comprises a primary main cutting edge (15), a secondary main cutting edge (16), and an end cutting edge (17). The end cutting edge (17) connects the primary main cutting edge and the secondary main cutting edge and borders on the primary main cutting edge at a primary transition point (15') and on the secondary main cutting edge at a secondary transition point (16'). A normal to the extension plane of the chip surface forms an acute clearance angle with the edge side along the cutting edge.
