Disclosed is a thin die adapted to be used in a press. The die disclosed herein includes a base or backing portion that provides rigidity to the die assembly. The base includes an indentation defining a boarder around the peripheral edge of the base. A thin die is housed in the indentation of the base and the thin die is adhered to the indentation of the base by an adhesive. The thin die is positioned in the indentation of the base so that raised portions of the thin die are facing away from the indentation in the base to allow the thin die to cut into a sheet material. Ejection foam is adhered to the raised portion side of the thin die by an adhesive so that the ejection foam protects the raised portion of the thin die and provides an ejection means of the cut shape out of the sheet material. Also disclosed is a die and press system utilizing the thin die disclosed herein. Included in the system is a die press, which may be a platen die press or a roller die press. The die press includes a cutting pad that allows the die to cut through the sheet material and into the cutting pad, if a platen die press is used. The system further includes a thin die adapted to be used with a die press. The thin die includes a base portion, a thin die portion, and an ejection foam portion, wherein the base portion and the ejection foam portion sandwich the thin die portion so that the thin die is located in an indentation located in the base and is adhered to the base by an adhesive. Further, the ejection foam portion is adhered to the thin die portion so as to protect raised portions of the thin die portion. The ejection foam protects the raised portions of the thin die portion and acts as an ejection means to eject the cut shapes from the sheet material.

A cutting die (13, 14) is formed by scanning a laser (10) beam along a path corresponding to a blade (14) pattern, and introducing a selected powder (16A) to build up an integral blade (14) of high grade, and hard-to-wear material on the relatively softer die body (13). The final blade (14) shape is machined or produced by EDM or milling. Further hardening by heat treatment is optional. Other heat sources and cladding materials could be used.

A cutting die is produced by a process comprising forming resist patterns corresponding to the shapes of low cutting edges and resist patterns corresponding to the shapes of high cutting edges on a metal plate and conducting an etching treatment on the metal plate. According to the different embodiments of the process, the height of each of the cutting edges may be varied by varying the width of the relevant resist pattern, varying the timing of removing the relevant resist pattern, and/or selectively applying sealing treatment thereto. The process enables easy production of a cutting die provided either with low cutting edges and high cutting edges or with embossing parts and high cutting edges. Further, the use of this cutting die enables simultaneous execution of full cutting and half cutting (or embossing) operations, so that labels, box development base papers and the like can be produced by a single process.

To affix die D to platen F, a location device E is provided on die D and has means H for frictional engagement with at least one of rules A at a position in which rules A are accurately aligned with channels G. Adhesive on die strip D causes adhesion of die strip D to platen F whereafter device E pulls free from rules A. Device E is then removed from die strip D before creasing operation begins.

A method and apparatus for making rotary die racks (12) having an elongated shape including a partially circular forming face (16) of less than 180° and a flat mounting surface (26) that faces in the opposite direction as the forming face (16). Cast metal blanks of the die racks are secured to a rotatable spindle (10) in a side-by-side relationship to turn the forming faces (16). Forming projections, i.e. teeth that extend parallel to the axis of the forming face, are then cut in the turned face (16). Heat treating of the die racks (12) is then performed before mounting thereof on a fixture to perform a finish grinding of the teeth. The spindle preferably includes a spindle member and a central shaft on which the spindle member is mounted for rotation. The fixture includes a pair of spaced end plates and a bed that extends between the end plates and has a stop and an adjustable positionerforclamping the die racks.

The present invention is a bending machine for bending material such as steel to form cutting dies for products such as cloth, leather or the like. Coiled material (12) is fed through a material washer (108), straightener (110) and printer (164) by a material feeder (104) to a bending head (106). If required the material is forwarded through the bending head to a heating unit (114) and retracted to the bending unit to aid in bending. A nicking tool (116) is also provided ahead of the bending tool (106) to nick the material. The nicks enable the cutting die to cut notches in the product being cut. A support surface at the output end of the machine supports the material as it is bent into the required form.
