A muffler (20) for attenuating noise produced by a pneumatic device having limited clearance. The muffler (20) includes a housing (22), a base (24) and an acoustic absorption insert (100). The housing (22) defines an upstream end and a downstream end (34), with the downstream end (36) being closed. Further, the housing tapers from a maximum width of less than approximately 1.5 inches (38 mm) to the downstream end. The base (24) is secured to the housing at the upstream end and includes a tube (26) for directing airflow and sound waves into the housing. Finally, the acoustic absorption insert (100) is disposed within the housing and includes a web of fibers configured to absorb sound waves. The muffler can be utilized with a pneumatic valve having limited space available for receiving the muffler, providing noise attenuation with minimal back pressure.

A compressed-gas-operated reciprociating-piston device, e.g. a concrete breaker, rock drill or chipping hammer, has a cylinder component of composite construction, comprising a rigid inner metal tube (40, 40A) in which the piston (12, 12A) reciprocates and a moulded outer sleeve (41,41 A) of rubber or plastics material, e.g. polyurethane, which surrounds the tube over the majority of its length and is bonded thereto. The sleeve has three integral moulded longitudinal ribs (43, 43A) in which are moulded longitudinal passages (32, 32A) for transmission of compressed air to the cylinder interior. An outer tubular muffler (50, 50A) of rubber or plastics material surrounds the composite cylinder component and defines a sound-reducing path for exhaust gas from the cylinder to the atmosphere. The exhaust gas is discharged into two spaces (83, 84, 87 or 83A, 84A) defined between two pairs of adjacent ribs (43, 43A) of the sleeve within the muffler, these two spaces forming part of an expansion chamber in the muffler. This expansion chamber communicates with the atmosphere either directly through exhaust ports (52) (Figures 1 to 3), or via a restriction (86A) and a second expansion chamber (88A, 87A) in the muffler to a final duct (91A) leading to the exhaust opening (52A) and formed in the thickness of the muffler wall (Figures 6 to 9). The combination of ribbed sleeve and muffler provides improved sound-damping and exhaust silencing for the device.

Über der Deckwand (10) für die Zylinderräume (46, 47) und Kammern (48, 49, 50) befindet sich ein weiterer Raum (51) mit Durchgängen zu den Kammern (48-50) oberhalb eines Verbundzylinders (3). Im unteren Teil des Gehäuses (2) befindet sich eine Resonanzkammer (58), wobei die Durchgänge von zwei der Kammern (48, 49), die das Abgas aus den Zylinderräumen (46, 47) erhalten, durch den Verbundzylinder unterschiedlich sind. Die dritte Kammer (50) führt zum Auspuff (59). Damit werden dieAbgase über zwei parallele Kammern (48, 49) einer in Reihe liegenden dritten Kammer (50) zugeführt.
