The substrate comprises electrical contacts for external electrical connection in order to receive image signals used for driving recording elements. A logic circuit converts the image signals which are serially supplied to the electrical contacts into parallel signals to be applied to the recording elements via electrical leads. The electrical contacts, the recording elements, the logic circuit, and selectors for selectively driving the recording elements are built in the substrate. The selectors are disposed in a one-to-one relation with the recording elements, corresponding to the interval of the recording elements.

Both a method and apparatus are provided for sizing and operating enable groups of thermal elements in a thermal printer to allow the printer to be operated by power sources (7) having outputs too small to operate all of the thermal elements simultaneously. Prior to the printing operation, the maximum number of thermal elements that can be actuated by the output of the power source (7) is determined, and then divided into the total number of thermal elements. Next, the resulting quotient is rounded up into the nearest integer in order to ascertain the number of enable groups. The number of enable groups is then divided into the total number of thermal elements to determine the size of each enable group. During the printing operation, streams of non-actuating data are multiplexed into the stream of image data to create virtual enable groups wherein the number of thermal elements actuatable by the image data is no greater than the number of thermal elements in any of the enable groups at any time during the printing operation, thereby preventing the power source (7) from being overtaxed.

An image forming system includes a thermal head (21) having a linear array of a plurality of heater elements (21a) extending in a direction of the main scanning, and a head driver (72) which drives the thermal head on the basis of image data to selectively operate the respective heater elements according to image data while the thermal head is being moved relative to a recording medium in a direction of the sub-scanning, thereby forming a copy of the image represented by the image data on the recording medium line by line. The heater elements are divided into a plurality of head blocks (21a-21d) which are contiguous in the main scanning direction, and the head driver is provided with a plurality of head drive segments (72a-72d) of the same number as the number of the head blocks. Image data consisting of a plurality of pieces of line image data is stored in a memory (52). Each line image data consists of a plurality of image data fractions which are of the same number as the number of the head drive segments. When contiguous multi-imaging is to be carried out, the image data fraction of each of the pieces of line image data corresponding to the part to be multiplied of the image is input into the head drive segments which drive the head blocks corresponding to the positions where the copies are to be formed.

The control means (21, 42, 43) is adapted to select, according to the width of said set tape (T), whether the heat elements (11a) used for printing a column of dots along the width of said set tape are to be driven all at once or are to be grouped into a plurality of groups and the groups driven sequentially. Such grouping allows printing on a wide tape even if the power supply to the printing device has a limited capacity as is the case with a battery.

Dynamic division drive of a thermal printer is simplified to reduce the number of signal lines, and history control drive is made efficient to shorten time necessary for data transfer. The thermal printer comprises a heating array 1 for printing split up into blocks and arranged in a line, a plurality of driver units 2, each for driving a block of the heating array 1 separately from other blocks, and a logic circuit 3 for controlling the driver units 2. The logic circuit 3 comprises a block specifying means 31 for specifying one driver unit 2 or two or more driver units 2 to be operated according to block selection data BDAT inputted from an external source. Only the specified driver units 2 are simultaneously operated according to a single strobe signal DST inputted from the external source. Further, the logic circuit 3 comprises a data operation means 33 for internally originating history data based on print data HDAT inputted from the external source. Further, the logic circuit 3 comprises a transfer control means 32 for transferring the history data and the print data HDAT efficiently to each of the driver units 2 to carry out history control drive of each of the blocks of the heating array.

The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for driving and controlling a thermal head used in a printing device, such as a tape printer, in response to the temperature variations of the environment and the thermal head. In the printing operation of the printing device, measurements are made of the initial temperature T₁ immediately after the power is switched on, the temperature T₂ prior to printing, and the ambient temperature T 3(i) of the thermal head each time the thermal head prints. If the temperature difference between the temperature T₁ and the temperature T₂ is small, the duration of the current signals provided to the thermal head is controlled in accordance with the temperature T₂. If the difference is large, the duration is controlled in accordance with the temperature T₁. If the rate of the increase in temperature T 3(i) during printing is large, the duration is controlled in accordance with the initial temperature T₂ to reduce the duration. If the temperature T 3(i) exceeds a temperature which indicates over-heating, the printing operation is aborted. Thus, the present invention allows for controlling the thermal head drive by means of the ambient temperature which is not affected by the heat generation of the thermal head and in accordance with the thermal state of the thermal head.
