A coating composition for the preparation of CB coated carbonless copy paper includes a water based dispersion of a sizing agent which is such as to increase the hydrophobicity of the paper substrate. Sizing agents that are suitable include, alkyl ketene dimers and rosin derivatives, and the use of such substances has been found to reduce the measured through-thickness porosity of substrate papers with respect to the solvents employed for the colour-formers, thereby making it possible to utilise grades of paper previously considered unsuitable for use in the manufacture of carbonless copy materials. Alkyl ketene dimers that may be used include those with C12-C22 alkyl radicals, and the rosins which may be used include fortified rosins and modified rosin derivatives.

This invention relates to improved imaging systems based on the formation of yellow colored coordination compounds of transition metals with certain ligands. The formation of colored coordination compounds can be employed to generate images and is important in the manufacture and use of pressure sensitive transfer papers for preparing carbonless copies. In particular, this invention relates to certain ethanediimidic acid bis[(arylalkylidene)hydrazide] compounds, and particularly to certain ethanediimidic acid bis[( o -hydroxyarylalkylidene)hydrazide] compounds, to their coordination compounds with certain transition metals, and to their use in pressure sensitive carbonless copy paper systems. These compounds have been found to provide excellent yellow colors when used in pressure sensitive carbonless copy-papers wherein the image is formed by the reaction of a color-forming compound with transition metal salts such as those of nickel, cobalt, iron, copper, and similar materials. These yellow color-formers have the advantage of greater solubility in encapsulation solvents and lower volatility than previously used yellow color-formers. The invention also concerns the admixture of these certain color-formers with N-(monosubstituted)dithiooxamides and/or N,N′-(disubstituted)dithiooxamides to form images of various colors and preferably black images during the application of appropriate pressure to pressure sensitive imaging constructions such as carbonless paper constructions.

A sheet of a color-developer for a pressure-sensitive recording paper is prepared by: (i) dissolving an organic color-developer in an organic solvent; (ii) adding the solution of the color-developer to an aqueous solution in which a surfactant and a water-soluble polymer are dissolved in a combined amount of from 0.2 to 50 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of said solution of the color-developer; (iii) emulsifying the so-formed mixture thereby forming minute liquid droplets with a diameter of 0.01 to 2 um comprising said solution of the color-developer; (iv) heating the liquid emulsion under agitation, thereby removing said organic solvent from said liquid droplets and obtaining an aqueous slurry of said color-developer; and (v) applying the aqueous slurry of said color-developer on a supporting sheet.
