A rim assembly includes a rim having multiple positioning portions extending from the inner periphery thereof and each positioning portion has a space defined therein. Each positioning portion further has an open side. Multiple spoke units each have the first end engaged with the space via the open side and are rotatable relative to the positioning portion. The second end of each spoke unit is connected with the hub. Each spoke unit has a securing member and positioning member which is mounted to the securing member. The securing member is connected with one end of a spoke and the positioning member positions the securing member and the spoke in the space. The spoke units are easily and quickly assembled with the positioning portions at the inner periphery of the rim.

The non-circular outer peripheral edges have first radii extending from the center axis of the rim and passing through the spoke openings that are larger than second radii of the non-circular outer peripheral edges passing midway between selected circumferentially adjacent pairs of the spoke openings.

These bends are positioned in the openings of the rims to retain the outer ends of the spokes in the openings of the rim. In selected embodiments, a fastener (160) or an adhesive may be used to more securely retain the outer ends (40) of the spokes (22a, 22b) in the openings (74) of the rim (24a, 24b). In certain other embodiments, the spoke attachment portion of the rim can be constructed of individually spaced elements (571, 671) which can either be fastened to the rim or form unitary part of the rim.

The spoke attachment portions of the rim 24 are divided into an outer circumferential section, a middle circumferential section with the spoke openings 58 formed therein and an inner circumferential section. At least parts of the middle circumferential sections of the spoke attachment portions have a first predetermined wall thickness located above and below the spoke openings 58. The first predetermined wall thicknesses of these parts are greater than a second predetermined wall thickness of the inner circumferential sections of the spoke attachment portions.
