A fabricated vehicle axle is provided with a main body defined by the combination of a channel having an inverted U-shaped configuration and a bottom plate. The ends of the main body are curved upwardly to define a pair of gooseneck portions. Axle head sections are formed at the ends of the axle and are closed off by end extensions extending from the front and rear walls of the channel and a cover flap extension extending from the top wall of the channel. A head plate is inserted within the space between the cover flap and the top edges of the end extensions. King pin bolt holes are machined at each axle head section into the cover flaps, head plates and each end of the bottom plate to permit a king pin to be installed therein.

A tie rod extendable and retractable telescopic axle assembly (1) wherein a pair of axle beams (12, 13) are slidably mounted in a box beam (11) integral with a vehicle chassis (8). Steering linkage (16) and associated wheel assemblies (15) are mounted on the outer ends of the axle beams (12, 13), and the inner ends of the axle beams (12, 13) within the box beam (11) are telescopically mounted relative to each other which provides an increased wheel base when the axle beams (12, 13) are moved outwardly of the box beam (11). A hydraulic cylinder (17) and piston rod assembly (21, 22) is mounted between the box beam (11) and wheel assemblies (15) so that the hydraulic cylinder (17) and rod assembly function (21, 22) not only as an actuator for extending and retracting the axle beams but also as a tie rod for the wheel assemblies (15).

Adjustment may be achieved by mounting each wheel (2) on a separate stub-axle (7) and locating the stub-axle (7) in a hollow member (8), within which it is a sliding fit. Adjustment of the wheels affords a relatively wide lateral wheel-base for towing stability and also permits the wheels to be retracted to within the limits of the equipment, for passage through narrow, e. g. domestic, spaces.
